Fanli didn’t hear a single word Xitian said. She simply stared at Su Shiye in silence, feeling as though the most fragile part of her heart had been pierced through. She didn’t dare turn her head toward Xitian, fearing he would see the abnormality in her expression. “Xitian, I want to speak with him alone for a few moments. Is that alright?”
“Fine.” Xitian exited the room.
Once Xitian had led the others out, Fanli swam in two circles around the table before looking up. “Are you still unwilling to abandon the Creation Furnace plan?”
“It is impossible. This is something I must do.”
“Why?” Fanli was growing angry, unable to believe her quick-witted brother could be so stubborn. “You won’t just cause the Sea God’s descendants to vanish; you’ll cause the entire political and economic system of the Light Sea to collapse! You are the Archon; you know better than anyone that while the descendants are few in number, their influence is gargantuan, don’t you?!”
“Say no more. If you came here today to stop this plan, then I am telling you: you are wasting your breath.”
“Why? Why?!”
“It is all for my own selfish desires. Why ask so much?”
“I don’t believe you are that kind of person. Can we not sit down and communicate properly?”
Su Shiye remained silent for a long time. He had originally intended to tell her the other reason behind the Furnace plan, but given her reaction to the project and the desperate fervor with which she fought for the Light Sea, he finally realized they were truly not the same kind of person. Even if he told her, it would only cause her pain; it would not change their respective positions. Thus, he let out a soft laugh, his demeanor turning even colder. “Is there anything else? If not, I’ll see you on the battlefield.”
“Fine. You’ve given up on communication. I don’t care what your goal is; your revolutionary path in the Light Sea has reached its end. Surrender. Hand over the position of Archon and stop being so obstinate.”
“Surrender? Go back to sit in a prison cell, stripped of my political rights for life, while I offer my congratulations to you and Garth Xitian on your happy marriage?” Su Shiye laughed for a long while before suddenly erupting in fury. “How can you be so shameless? You collude with your fiancé to take me down, planning your wedding date, yet every day you spread your legs for me and tell me in that sweet voice how much you love me!”
Fanli’s head buzzed. She felt suffocated, but she fought to maintain her composure. “Against a lecherous man like you, such methods are quite effective, aren't they? Your words don't provoke me. My life belongs to the Light Sea; what does chastity matter?”
Su Shiye laughed again. “You certainly talk tough in front of me. Then why were you so afraid of your fiancé finding out just now? It seems my Li-li hasn't told her new friend what a... flavorful woman she is.”
“Why is the polygamous Lord Su Shiye being so modest?” Fanli countered.
“Shut up! You stayed in my bed every single day—who was I being polygamous with?!” At this, Su Shiye pressed his hand to his chest and coughed violently several times. “I couldn't see anything but you, and while I was blinded, you were getting together with Xitian?! Truly, Fanli, tell me—how did you manage to navigate between two men so effortlessly? You... *cough*... *cough cough cough*...”
Fanli simply watched him, motionless.
“The things you did with me... no girl with a shred of modesty could have done them. For so long, not a single day went by without it. Do you really feel not even a hint of reluctance to let go?”
“None. I’m sorry, but I don’t dwell on petty romances.”
“Haha, yes, my mistake. I’m the one fucking dwelling on petty romance... I did nothing wrong, except for the mistake of falling in love with a cold-blooded woman like you.” By the end, Su Shiye laughed at himself mockingly, coughing hard again. He drew a breath, seemingly wanting to say more, but his eyes were rimmed with red. As if unable to control his emotions, he cut the communication.
“Su Shiye!!”
Fanli stared at the vanishing light of the transmission. Gritting her teeth in rage, she swiped a glass sculpture off the table, shattering it to pieces.
***
Though Su Shiye looked wretched in the transmission, his hand was anything but gentle in battle.
Starting from the early hours of July 6, 24731, the Holy City Legion and the Liuli Legion began a joint assault on the Storm Sea. Missiles, shells, and bombs exploded frequently in the ocean, destroying countless cities and villages. Although Veda had long prepared its military defenses, two years was too short a time. Facing Su Shiye’s orders to fire at full capacity, most of the attacked cities in the Storm Sea were left devastated.
On July 10, after two days of continuous tsunamis gave the Storm Sea a brief moment to breathe, reinforcements from the Storm Party in the Rift Sea and Winter Sea arrived, as did Holy City Party reinforcements from the Bodhi Sea and Star Sea. Multiple armies engaged in fierce combat in the waters above and around the Storm Sea. Arcane magic and venom flew through the water. Su Shiye ordered the deployment of a third No. 9 Uranium Bomb; instantly, rubble tumbled through the sea and flames reached for the surface. A vast number of Storm Sea residents were buried under the bombardment before they could even realize what was happening.
On the surface, Veda appeared calm, but internally, it was a mess. The military frequently reported disastrous news: more cities fallen, more deaths, more warships scrapped... Every report was a hint that the Garth Clan should issue the order to march out and meet the enemy.
Many times, Xitian could not sit still, casting anxious glances at Fanli.
Fanli only shook her head. “It’s not time. Wait longer.”
“Did you hear her? Wait!” Xitian waved his hand impatiently.
Su Shiye had once issued a prohibition: without the Archon’s permission, no Holy City Party army was to launch an attack on civilians of the outer seas.
In truth, this rule specifically referred to Veda, the capital of the Storm Sea. He had told Fanli the reason: Veda was the Storm Party’s final stronghold. Bombing it would create the maximum amount of panic, making it suitable only for the killing blow.
According to Su Shiye’s usual style, he would surely take down the surrounding cities of the Storm Sea slowly, fundamentally shaking the Storm Party’s morale before touching Veda. But this time was different. His physical and mental state did not allow for such patience.
“Direct the target of the attack to Veda!” Inside the Holy City Party command center, the Great General of the Liuli Legion was thundering with rage. “Kill ten thousand citizens of Veda, and that nest of Garth dogs will beg for mercy. This time, even the Lord Archon has taken the field personally—what are we dallying for?!”
“No, absolutely not.” Aize waved his hands frantically. “The word from the Holy Yegana Legion is also no. If we don't destroy the major bases of the Storm Sea and rashly strike Veda, we’re essentially putting our troops on a roasting spit. If the Rift Sea and Winter Sea forces intercept us around Veda, we won't be able to bomb the city, and we’ll likely be isolated and endangered. It’s too risky.”
“But can Lord Su Shiye hold out?!” The Great General turned his head toward Su Shiye, his eyes bulging like copper bells.
“Better to ask the man himself!”
Both men looked toward Su Shiye. He sat in his chair, his back straight, but because of the acute lack of physical energy, his mind was a chaotic fog. His lips were nearly as white as his face. “Ask Arno. Arno knows what to do.”
“L-Lord Su Shiye, General Tan has been dead for nearly fifty years...” Aize whispered.
Su Shiye pressed his hand to his forehead. Only then did he remember it was now the year 24731, and Arno was long gone. He picked up a small dagger from the table and pricked his thigh; the surrounding seawater turned red. He frowned deeply, his mind clearing significantly. “Do not strike Veda. Continue attacking their military bases.”
Two more days passed. Fanli and the others received news that seven more cities had fallen. The reinforcements above were locked in a stalemate, and it was inevitable that cities on the seabed plains and natural shelves would suffer collateral damage.
“If this continues, the Storm Sea can lower the Lion Flag and raise the Falcon Flag!” Even the Patriarch of the Garth Clan could no longer contain his fury. “Academician Suyi, what on earth are you waiting for?!”
Fanli watched the battle reports on the screen, her eyes blinking rapidly. Her heart was racing; her fingers clenched and relaxed, clenched and relaxed. She was beginning to fall into deep uncertainty.
How could Su Shiye suddenly be so patient? Was he still lucid enough to insist on taking down the Storm Sea bases one by one? No, in his current state, conquering the Storm Sea was definitely not his goal. He hadn't been prepared for a decisive battle with the Storm Sea; it was her theft of the Flame Eye that had provoked him into this war.
He had to fight a blitzkrieg, or he would lose.
She was betting that he didn't have this patience.
“Continue to wait.” Fanli grit her teeth, as if trying to give herself confidence. “Wait for them to attack Veda.”
“What?!” the Garth Patriarch exclaimed in shock. “Why?”
Fanli looked at him silently without answering. Within seconds, he understood her meaning: if the Holy City army attacked Veda, they would gain the sympathy of all other regions in the Light Sea, placing the Storm Sea on the moral high ground for a counterattack and weakening the morale of the enemy reinforcements. Furthermore, Veda’s military defenses were the strongest; if the Holy City army shifted their target to Veda, it would alleviate the destruction in other regions, allowing ship stations, radar stations, coastal defenses, and military bases a brief moment to recover.
After discussing these points with the Patriarch, Fanli added, “Veda is too far for them. Half of the Holy Yegana combat ships are out of range. Without their escort, the bombers will be vulnerable. They won't have the chance to drop uranium bombs.”
“Continue to wait!” Xitian ordered. After a thought, he added, “Also, order the 11th, 12th, and 17th Brigades in the east to withdraw from the Storm Sea entirely. Launch a full-scale surprise attack on Holy Yegana!”
Because the main force of the Holy City army was in the Storm Sea, Holy Yegana’s defenses were thin. It was too late to return for defense, and Su Shiye certainly couldn't make it back.
Holy Yegana fell into the greatest panic and disaster of the Burning Era.
On the first day, Ellen was leading Saifeiqing and his son toward a shelter when a flash of fire ignited above. He instinctively shielded the mother and child, throwing them beneath him.
Within two hours, Kunty and Shamir heard the news and rushed to the hospital where Ellen had been taken. They saw her fiancé and Saifeiqing lying on two separate beds. Saifeiqing was covered in scratches and bruises, but Ellen had lost the lower half of his body. The seawater in the room was thick with the smell of blood; Ellen’s eyes already held the hollow void of the dying.
Shamir hugged her arms, paralyzed by the scene.
Kunty let out a cry of grief and rushed to Ellen, grabbing his hand. “You bastard!! Why did you do something so stupid?!”
Ellen slowly turned his head. His face was ghastly, yet he remained exceptionally handsome.
“Kunty, I will never say I love you in this life, because you aren't worth it.” Having said that, he grabbed the back of Kunty’s head and kissed her fiercely, forcing the taste of blood and seawater into her mouth, their tongues entangling violently.
This was the first time Kunty had ever kissed Ellen; she was stunned. But after the kiss ended, she began to wail again. “If you don't love me, why did you kiss me?!”
“This is your... punishment...” Ellen let out a cold laugh. “To punish you... so that whenever you think of me, you’ll think of... being kissed by a man you hate so much...”
As he finished, he looked at her with a final, mocking glint in his eyes, but he moved no more.
***
The large-scale attack on Holy Yegana failed to sway Su Shiye’s will. This was something the Storm Party had never expected.
Fanli was nearly unable to sit still. She couldn't sleep well any night; as soon as she fell into a light slumber, she would be jolted awake by the sound of distant, continuous explosions. Those explosions were devastating at their source, but to her, they sounded like popping bubbles. Even these tiny sounds made her tremble with a profound lack of security, as if the world were too small to escape. Yet, at the same time, she hoped those sounds would come closer...
At one point, she remembered something: usually, when a man grew up as fair and handsome as Xinghai, he would want to use his appearance as a weapon, flaunting it for the world to see. But Su Shiye was different; he had never cared much for a man’s looks, only wanting to prove his masculine power.
A "pretty boy" without reproductive function and a "rough man" with high fertility were always two extremes in the male world—the former despised, the latter revered. No matter how much of a "man's man" Xinghai tried to be as a child, he couldn't avoid being categorized as the former. He hated his original body, hated his birth, and even hated the name Xinghai. Yet, after becoming Archon, he still protected his hometown, the Star Sea, whether intentionally or not. It was a contradiction.
Fanli suddenly had a new strategic direction and immediately contacted Xitian in the command center.
“Xitian, dispatch a unit to advance with full force toward Phili Town in the Star Sea. Make it high-profile when they get close; let Su Shiye know.”
By this stage of the war, the damage to the Storm Sea bases had reached a breaking point. If Su Shiye remained patient and maintained his current tactics—disrupting the Storm Army’s command systems—he would inevitably seize control of the Storm Sea.
Fortunately, Fanli’s gamble worked.
The Holy City Party dispatched five units back to the Star Sea, while the rest sailed toward Veda’s territorial waters, launching a venting, full-scale assault on the Storm Sea capital.
Starting July 19, Holy City fleets sailed over Veda every day, dropping weapons of mass destruction. This act thoroughly ignited the blood of the warrior race—the Storm Sea people. Instead of being weakened by casualties, the morale of the entire Storm Sea population surged.
Because the Holy City Party had shifted its targets, the Storm Army bases that had been on the verge of collapse finally had a chance to breathe and return to life.
At the same time, Garth Xitian gave a speech in Veda that was broadcast across all seas. Instantly, the crowd’s passion was ignited; their roars echoed through the ocean, shaking the undersea mountain ranges and causing schools of fish thousands of kilometers away to scatter in flight.
Su Shiye had broken. The victory of this war belonged to the Storm Party.
Fanli’s final bet had succeeded—Phili Town was Su Shiye’s Achilles' heel. It was his weakness, his sorrow, his childhood shadow, the only light deep within his heart, and his most beautiful memory.
Five of the Holy City Party’s main units had been diverted, and the rest had taken a massive risk by going deep into Veda’s territory. As soon as they approached, the Veda army swarmed out in full force. Compared to the exhausted Holy City troops, the Veda army had been conserving its strength until now; they were like lions just reaching maturity, quickly shooting down over four hundred warships.
Because Su Shiye’s physical condition was extremely poor, he couldn't act separately from the Great General and the others; they were all stationed outside Veda. But every member of the Liuli Legion realized that bombing Veda was the most fatal mistake they had ever made. More importantly, Su Shiye was no longer lucid and could not make correct judgments. Without Su Shiye’s support, they had lost their spiritual pillar. Before Su Shiye could regain consciousness, the Great General ordered a retreat.
Fanli knew the final, critical moment had arrived.
Su Shiye’s warship retreated, but the Storm Army clung to its tail like a snapping turtle, pursuing it relentlessly to the central crossroads of the Storm Sea.
Everything was within Fanli’s calculations. She was waiting for him on a natural rock shelf.
The moment the warship was disabled, dust and smoke rose from the rock walls, and marine life had long since fled. After the Great Arcanists cast a forbidden spell, the warship was encircled. Storm Sea soldiers swarmed forward, prying open the hatch. Before long, the Great General of the Liuli Legion and Auda Aize were brought out in custody.
Fanli looked at the two of them, her pupils shrinking slightly. “Where is Su Shiye?”
“Reporting to Academician Suyi, the Lord Archon is still inside. W-we are waiting for your final command.”
Fanli studied Aize and the General for a moment, then swam into the cabin. She then understood that the soldiers weren't waiting for her command out of protocol, but out of fear—Su Shiye was sitting by the window, leisurely drinking a glass of "Profane Love" red wine, as if he were about to hear a report of victory from his subordinates. His gaze was lazy, his fingers tapping lightly on the table. He still wore the Holy Light Sea Feather, the symbol of the highest status in Holy Yegana, looking noble and inviolable.
Seeing her enter, he gave a faint, breezy smile. “We finally meet again, Academician Suyi.”
If Fanli hadn't known how much the loss of the Flame Eye affected him, she would never have guessed that his physical state was on the verge of collapse.
“Lord Archon, please exit the cabin,” Fanli said, giving him a left-handed salute.
“Actually, I don't understand why you are always thinking of defeating me.” Su Shiye propped his chin on his hand, offering her a shallow smile. “By having me, you would have everything. And the price you would need to pay is so very small—just bear a child for me. Other than that, you would need to do nothing at all.”
“Are you a breeding maniac?”
“No, I just want to tell you that being my woman is very easy. Yet you chose an exceptionally arduous path.”
“If you hadn't walked a path of heinous crimes to the very end, I wouldn't have had to work so hard. I haven't told anyone about your Furnace plan; otherwise, you would be torn to shreds by every Sea God descendant. As long as you cooperate with me, I will keep your secret forever.” She slowly swam toward Su Shiye and reached out her hand. “Come. I’ll take you out. The war is over.”
Though Fanli was tall, her frame was small, even down to her wrists and fingers—her hand was fair and slender, her fingertips delicate and feminine. Seeing this hand, Su Shiye remembered how she used to nestle in his arms, tracing circles in his palm with her finger.
In this moment, he still wanted to hold her close. But he no longer had the strength, nor any standing to do so. He could only maintain his current posture, saying softly, “Now that I am no longer Archon, will you marry Xitian?”
“Yes.”
“Because he can continue to help you achieve your ideals, correct?”
“Correct.”
“Do you think Xitian loves you?”
“We’ve reached this point; why are we still talking about love? ‘Love’ is just an emotion, something far too fleeting. You can love someone today and not tomorrow, but interests are eternal.” Fanli’s deep blue eyes were like the sea outside the window, beautiful and vast. “Xitian and I are a community of shared interests. Even if he doesn't love me, he will value this marriage.”
“Yes, you are quite right. Xitian doesn't love you, so he wins.”
Su Shiye knew that she was no longer even bothering to lie because he had failed; he had completely lost his voice. He lowered his head, laughing mockingly at himself. “Did you ever love me?”
“I loved Xinghai.”
“Who is answering that question? Is it Fanli, or Suyi?” After a moment of silence, he smiled again. “Forget I asked.”
Because whether it was Suyi or Fanli, the one they loved was Xinghai.
He had once thought he could defeat his own past. He thought Fanli fought him so hard only because she was being stubborn; as long as he was willing to be gentle with her, she would surely be moved. Later, he discovered it wasn't so. This woman knew exactly what she wanted; she could not be swayed. Many women might become someone else for a man’s love, giving up things they held dear, but she could not.
She had taken this long, winding path back, and she had still achieved what she set out to do.
Su Shiye had always respected his opponents, even those who defeated him. Thus, thinking of this, he felt a shred more admiration for her. But between them, this was it.
Only someone whose thoughts were perfectly aligned with hers could walk with her to the end.
Fanli moved a bit closer, her hand still extended. “Let’s go.”
Now that her success was at hand, most of his comrades dead, and the reinforcements from the two legions failing to arrive, the Storm Army wanted to capture him alive, so she had become a bit gentler. But what about after? Su Shiye’s physical strength had long since crumbled, but he looked at her hand, then up at her, grit his teeth, and suddenly his body temperature surged. He smashed through the cabin wall and charged into the sea!
A silhouette exactly the shape of Su Shiye was left in the cabin wall, its edges glowing a bright, fiery red. Fanli’s eyes widened, and she screamed, “Run!!” She grabbed the two nearby soldiers and rushed out of the cabin.
All the soldiers followed her out. One was a step too slow; just as he reached the hatch, a thunderous explosion erupted as the entire glowing warship blew apart. The water was filled with the smell of fuel and blood; a soldier’s gloved hand floated past their feet.
Fanli and the others coughed repeatedly, but they saw that Su Shiye had already fled to a distant mountain peak.
“I’m going to snipe him. Don't move, wait for me here!” she shouted, snatching two ray guns from a soldier and swimming rapidly toward Su Shiye.
The arcane energy in the sea had drained Su Shiye dry. He was kneeling on the highest peak, clutching his chest, coughing frantically. His lips were as white as his skin. Away from the eyes of the soldiers, Fanli’s defensiveness relaxed, but as her logic softened, she fell into a massive pit of grief.
This man had once been her god, her sun, the brightest lighthouse on her lost path; he was also her childhood, her youth, and the countless sweet moments when she realized she was a woman.
And now, either she or he himself had driven him to a point where there was no escape.
Behind him, below the peak, was the Meteor Trench, 8,274 meters deep. Further out, below that, was the hadal zone, over ten thousand meters deep. There was nowhere to rest nearby, not a single seabed plain touched by sunlight. He didn't even have the strength to stand, let alone swim across such a vast stretch of open water.
Seeing him like this, she clenched her fists behind her back, forcing herself to look away, refusing to be controlled by her emotions. “You’re stalling for time, waiting for reinforcements, aren't you?”
“Yes.” Su Shiye let out a laugh. “So, kill me. Kill me, and it all ends.”
“You’ve come all this way—would you give up your life so easily? What other scheme do you have? Speak.”
“Fanli, I am no match for you.” Su Shiye’s internal organs had begun to rupture. He clutched his intact chest as if trying to soothe a perfect skin that was filled with glass shards, then coughed softly. Blood surged up his throat and spilled from his mouth, staining the seawater around his lips red. He laughed. “You know very well why I have met such a crushing defeat here today. I am no match for you. I never was.”
“You’re just numbing yourself, brainwashing yourself, or perhaps trying to move yourself.” Fanli held onto her last shred of resolve, trying to suppress the tsunami of attachment surging within her. She said harshly, “We are the same kind of people. Our hands are stained with too much blood, so we both yearn for a pure partner. The 'pure' versions of us could love each other, but when the masks are finally ripped away, it’s just two executioners in love. What kind of love can executioners have?”
Su Shiye only continued to smile.
“I don't regret loving Xinghai; Xinghai was indeed perfect. I know you’re the same—you love the human girl Fanli, not the person I am now.”
“I do love Fanli, and I’ve always felt I was so stupid to fall into the hands of a little girl. But after learning the truth of your grand soul-swapping drama, I don't think it’s strange that I loved Fanli anymore.”
“...What do you mean?”
“You are so clever; you already understand what I mean.”
“Shut up.” At this moment, fear surpassed grief and anger. Fanli’s voice trembled slightly, almost as if she were issuing a command. “You have no idea what you’re saying! You’re just like me—you only love the untainted version of the other person! Stop lying to yourself!”
“Who is the one lying to themselves?”
“Stop this. There is no going back.”
“There is no going back.” Su Shiye used his last breath to push himself up, only to step back twice toward the Meteor Trench. “I truly envy you. You can love when you want to love, and stop when you don't.”
“You don't love me! You love the 'Li-li' you've unilaterally decided is pure! And she, like Xinghai, is dead! Now, in front of you, there is only Suyi, the one who caused you to become like this!” She threw a ray gun to him while pointing her own at him. “Come on, fight back! Didn't you want to unite the Light Sea? Where is your fighting spirit?!”
Su Shiye caught the gun, one hand clutching his chest, and coughed up more blood. Then, he tossed the gun into the Meteor Trench.
“Su Shiye, you... don't think this will make me pity you and let you go!”
He looked up and gave her a small smile.
“I love you.”
Those words completely shattered Fanli.
Though her expression didn't change, her entire body and soul felt like a thousand-year-old dried wood carving; one light touch, and she would crumble into a mess. In this moment, whether Su Shiye snapped her neck or kissed her deeply, she wouldn't have had a shred of strength to resist.
But he did nothing.
He simply gave her one last, faint look, turned, and leaped into the Meteor Trench.
Fanli chased after him, grabbing his hand.
Below Su Shiye was the endless abyss. He looked up at her, his eyes like the deep sea, his brows like canyons, appearing just as gentle as the day they first met. He gave her hand a light push, but didn't break free. He gazed at her for a moment, giving her enough time to think.
“Your regime has been overthrown. If you come back, there is only death.” Large tears rolled in Fanli’s eyes, her voice trembling, fragile and broken. “After you leave, never... never come back.”
The Light Sea was vast, but where was there a place left for him?
He smiled and nodded, pushing her hand again.
She still held him firmly, unable to find the heart to let go. He was dying, able only to draw the lightest breaths and speak in the faintest whisper. “Li-li, it was I who was not good. It wasn't this world that was bad, and certainly not your ideals. Let me go. Don't give up on everything you believe in. You can do it.”
Fanli’s eyes were bloodshot, but she couldn't say a single word.
Above the undersea mountain, a school of fish swam slowly through the swirling light, casting shimmering shadows over them. Her seaweed-like curls danced gently in the water.
She let go.
The moment her fingers opened, the accumulated tears finally burst forth, scattering in all directions.
In the ocean, there is a sorrowful term called "Whale Fall"—when a whale dies, its body slowly sinks into the deep sea, and everything returns to the primordial.
In the deep sea, there is also a beautiful phenomenon called "Marine Snow"—in the dim light of the twilight zone, fragments of organic matter composed of animals, plants, algae, and silt slowly drift apart, like a vast snowfall descending from the light into the abyss.
And so, the great whale that had dominated the Light Sea fell.
In the midst of this endless marine snow, the strongest predator in the ocean’s four hundred and fifty million years sank into the deep.
Su Shiye removed the Holy Light Sea Feather from his head and let it go.
It was as if a wind from the abyss was blowing in slow motion; the Holy Light Sea Feather drifted like a dandelion, like the feather of a white dove, floating with the current toward the mountain peak, beneath Fanli. His snow-white hair brushed his cheeks, always moving a beat slower than his body, dancing silently and gracefully.
Through the seawater where schools of fish darted, Su Shiye gazed at her tenderly until he slowly vanished at the end of the light.
The deep sea—this black, endless night—would henceforth lie between them.
