Taming the Water Lily

Chapter 64

Gou Feifei had lived for over twenty years, and generally speaking, he was a man of little luck. At the very least, his life within his family of origin had been quite rocky. Even after being taken home by his Omega father following his Alpha mother’s death, the cracks in his heart had long since rusted and mottled, becoming a void that could not be filled. He had never been in a relationship, nor had he met a lover. At least, before meeting Zhu Lili, he had never truly considered spending his life with anyone. But he genuinely felt that perhaps he was willing to experience many things with that dangerous Omega and walk a long path together. Because Gou Feifei could see the bitterness hidden behind those bright eyes; he believed they were kindred spirits. Love did not always have to be a rescue; it could also be two people holding each other and licking their wounds. As the son of an excellent beast tamer, he was determined to inherit his mother’s professional confidence, investing a hundred percent of his patience into taming the wild beast. Fortunately, his luck held out; he waited until his prey was willing to fall into the net. It was the opening day of the pet hospital. Gou Feifei, who was skilled at dealing with people, was assigned to welcome visitors. His humorous and easygoing personality attracted many Omegas and Betas; men and women crowded around the hospital entrance like fans, pestering him with questions and refusing to let him leave. Just as Gou Feifei was about to call out to his senior inside for help, the dull thud of high heels on concrete echoed from a distance. One step after another, matching the beat of his heart. In the next second, Gou Feifei saw the person he hadn't seen for half a month appear at the corner. She was as enchanting and sexy as ever, breathtakingly beautiful, with a pair of sunglasses perched on her high nose to help her hide her joys and sorrows. Several bodyguards in black stepped aside, placing an opening ceremony flower basket before him with a heavy thud. Then, the "culprit" who had given the order walked into the hospital as if it were none of her business. Gou Feifei turned to watch that familiar figure, a smile touching his lips that only he could perceive. Zhu Lili was like an uninvited guest, looking as if she were there to crash the place. Her heels clicked sharply against the floor, as if she were intentionally stomping for someone's benefit. The others in the pet hospital turned a blind eye, not daring to speak. In the midst of the awkwardness, the door opened, and some guests brought in a cage containing an exceptionally fierce Chihuahua. No one dared to approach. Seeing his senior, Jin Yan, reach for the cage, a memory flashed before Gou Feifei’s eyes. He frowned and stopped Jin Yan’s hand. He said to let him do it; he was half a beast tamer. Gou Feifei wasn't lying. Growing up in a circus, he really was equivalent to half a beast tamer. Thus, he naturally earned the right to "tame" the beast in the cage. While everyone else felt at ease, one person stood in the corner, her hand gripping a water bottle until her knuckles turned white, her emotions hidden behind her sunglasses. The cage opened, the beast emerged, and as expected, Gou Feifei was instantly scratched until his flesh was a bloody mess. After a sharp hiss of pain, that dominant and enchanting Red Water Lily lunged in front of him, her voice full of rage and trembling as she roared at him. "Gou Feifei! Can't you fucking stop trying to be a hero?!" Zhu Lili had heard bits about Gou Feifei’s childhood. She knew he was born in a circus and that his mother was a beast tamer who had died in a tragic fall during a performance. She didn't know if witnessing his mother’s departure as a child had left a lasting scar, but she knew Gou Feifei wasn't as easygoing and fearless as he appeared. He must be afraid too; he must have things he feared. So when Gou Feifei introduced himself as "half a beast tamer" and volunteered to tame the animal, her heart suddenly tightened, pulling at her anger. The Red Water Lily was exasperated, but she only received a gentle smile from the Red Maple Leaf. "I'm fine, don't worry." "Who the fuck is worried about you!" The conversation failed, and Gou Feifei truly had no heart for romance at the moment. He only wanted to solve the trouble at hand; after all, this little beast seemed quite difficult to tame. But he still showed immense patience, gently stroking the Chihuahua’s head and soothing it in a soft voice, telling it not to be afraid. He repeated it tirelessly, telling it that no one would hurt it again. Sitting nearby, Zhu Lili took it all in from the corner of her eye. Listening to his soft words, she dazed for a moment. She felt that perhaps Gou Feifei’s words weren't just for the puppy. Was it? Was he comforting her? Was his gentleness not an act? Could he really see her insecure heart? Or, when she completely bared herself to him, could he accept her tattered and worn past? Zhu Lili had never been this frustrated in her life. But before she could decide how to handle this tug-of-war of emotions, her body made the decision for her. She followed him into Gou Feifei’s lounge, anxious to find a first-aid kit to treat his wounds. Smelling that faint, non-aggressive yet addictive scent of Red Maple Leaf pheromones, Zhu Lili's irritation softened slightly. But in the next second, the owner of the pheromones asked her to leave. The reason was that he feared his Enigma pheromones would hurt her. Hurt her? Zhu Lili was speechless. He was acting as if they were innocent teenagers smelling each other's pheromones for the first time. The scents of Red Maple Leaf and Red Water Lily had already intertwined and surrendered to each other countless times; now he was playing the purity card. Zhu Lili didn't want to pay him any mind, nor did she want to argue with a bleeding patient. She quietly and gently bandaged his wound, her brow furrowed the entire time. She couldn't help but curse him for trying to be a hero. Gou Feifei looked down, denying it like a child admitting a mistake. "Not what?" Zhu Lili looked at the Enigma’s wounded expression, her heart aching with anger. "Are you trying to be a hero on purpose, or are you trying to provoke me?" She realized she had spoken without thinking, but it was too late. Surprisingly, the man opposite her took it in stride. "I didn't want to provoke you." He paused, turning his face away. "I know... I can't provoke you anyway." Zhu Lili opened her mouth but swallowed her words, continuing to wrap the gauze. Unexpectedly, the man instantly put on an air of indifference again. He reminded her that she was the one who said they should never contact each other again, and mockingly asked if she had already been conquered by his charm. Zhu Lili’s heart ached so much it was hard to breathe, but she couldn't lose face. Gou Feifei sensed the Omega’s emotions and apologized in a panic. But the Omega gave a cold laugh, sarcastically saying she would never feel sad for him. "Fine, I understand." This was the last thing Gou Feifei said. Like his previous clumsy, petulant farewell, it was devoid of emotion, appearing exceptionally calm. The last line of defense in Zhu Lili’s heart was finally swept away, collapsing completely as Gou Feifei opened the door to leave. She pushed him against the door and kissed him fiercely. Zhu Lili admitted she had lost; she had been tamed by the legendary strongest gender. Not just in bed. And Gou Feifei, having gained the upper hand, finally breathed a sigh of relief. He thought that this time, he hadn't lost his bet with himself. He used all his gentleness to drop a maple leaf into the water, and the proud, brave Red Water Lily had surged out of the water to come to his side.
