A Grand Graduation Proposal

Chapter 75

July brought another graduation season to Nanda. Beneath the Diligence Building, many graduates in academic regalia were busy taking photos. Zhang Siyi stood by the roadside with a set of robes draped over his arm, his head down as he messaged Jiang Yuan on WeChat. Z.sy: *Bro, where are you??? It’s almost our class’s turn!!!* Your Baby Yuan: *Almost there.* Your Baby Yuan: *Did you get my robes?* Z.sy: *Got 'em! I’m waiting for you by the road!* Just as the message sent, three cars drove up in a line and pulled over in front of him. Jiang Yuan rolled down the window and jerked his chin toward the other door. "Get in." Zhang Siyi scrambled inside and stuffed the robes toward him. Jiang Yuan shed his suit jacket and pulled on the graduation gown. "Let's go." Jiang Yuan signaled the driver to pull up to the gate. A crowd of classes was already lined up in front of the stone monument engraved with the school motto. Although Nanda students had known for years that their school housed a tycoon who traveled with luxury cars and bodyguards, Jiang Yuan was rarely seen outside of class, making him something of a legendary figure. His high-profile arrival immediately drew a flurry of craned necks and curious stares. Under a nearby tree, a group of girls whispered excitedly. "Ahhh! Is that tycoon from your major really that handsome? If I’d known, I would’ve tagged along to your lectures last time!" "Wake up... no matter how handsome he is, he’s got nothing to do with you." "Who knows? Maybe he likes my type!" "Heh, the guy came out of the closet back in freshman year, okay?" "WTF???" "Here, get your phone out. Big sister is going to introduce you to the 'Nancheng Couple' super-topic on Weibo. High-visual-tier dual CEOs. It’s super sweet!" Zhang Siyi nudged Jiang Yuan with his elbow. "You and Brother Xie have quite the fanbase." Jiang Yuan gave him a flat look and didn't respond, clearly uninterested in the topic. Zhang Siyi was just making small talk. He glanced around and changed the subject. "There’s a lot of people today. Are you sure you don't want Brother Xiong and the others to get out of the car?" "Having them there would only make us stand out more." Jiang Yuan put on his mortarboard, letting himself blend into the crowd, then added mischievously, "But if you want him to accompany you, I can tell him to get out." "...No need." Zhang Siyi’s tone was stiff, but his eyes flickered toward the car before quickly snapping back. Seeing his "I have no idea what you're talking about" act, Jiang Yuan chuckled. "Don't think I don't know. You two have been rolling around in the same bed for four years. You really don't plan on giving him an official status?" Zhang Siyi: "!!!" Zhang Siyi: "How do you know?! He wouldn't report that kind of thing to you, would he?!" Jiang Yuan looked at him like he was an idiot. "Did you forget that the villa he lives in is mine? You scan your face to get in there every night at midnight—did you really think I wouldn't know?" Zhang Siyi: "You’re a chairman who makes tens of millions every minute! How do you have time to pay attention to such trivial things?!" Jiang Yuan spread his hands. "I’m busy, but my robot is very bored." Zhang Siyi: "..." He had forgotten that his brother’s house contained the world’s most gossipy AI. "Do you really not plan on telling your family?" Jiang Yuan crossed his arms and looked at him. "Don't tell me it's just a physical thing. None of your previous flings lasted more than three months, did they?" Zhang Siyi kicked at a pebble on the ground, looking dejected. "I’m afraid my dad won't approve of him. He’ll probably try to force us to break up again." "It’s not that your dad won't approve of him; it’s that you were too wild in the past. You made your dad think everyone was just trying to climb into your bed for money. Besides, he was your dad’s bodyguard back then. You two got together right under his nose—of course he’d be pissed." Jiang Yuan patted his shoulder in comfort. "From what I’ve seen over the years, Xiong Zhipeng is a reliable guy. If you’re sure he’s the one, I’ll act as your lobbyist later." "Really?!" Happiness came so suddenly that Zhang Siyi was dazed by the windfall. He grinned like a fool. "Bro! You’re the best!" Jiang Yuan peeled the boy off his back, his lips curving into a faint but genuine smile. Zhang Siyi immediately bounced back to life. He clicked his tongue and asked, "I heard from my dad that you’ve almost completely sidelined those old geezers on the board?" Jiang Yuan straightened his robes, his tone casual. "They shouldn't have harbored thoughts they weren't meant to have. They’re getting on in years; it’s time they went home to retire." Seeing his cousin’s indifferent expression, Zhang Siyi shrank his shoulders like a quail. Over the last few years, his cousin had developed more and more of the aura of a powerful ruler. In the past, when he didn't smile, people worried he was going to lose his mind; now, when he didn't smile, people worried he was going to make *others* lose their minds. His danger level had increased exponentially. The only person who could probably keep him in check was Brother Xie. Thinking of this, Zhang Siyi couldn't help but ask curiously, "Is Brother Xie not coming to your graduation ceremony?" Jiang Yuan paused. "I don't know. He didn't say." Xie Chengnan had been working late every night recently, so Jiang Yuan hadn't brought up the ceremony. He hadn't thought it was a big deal, but now that Zhang Siyi had mentioned it, Jiang Yuan felt a slight tug of unease. He couldn't resist taking out his phone to check, but there were no messages from a certain someone. Feeling a bit disgruntled, Young Master Jiang stuffed his phone back into his pocket, his face becoming even more expressionless. By the time Jiang Yuan’s class finished their photos, it was almost time for the commencement ceremony. As everyone walked toward the auditorium in small groups, they found the crowd stalling halfway. There was a commotion up ahead. "What's going on?" Zhang Siyi stood on his tiptoes to see, but he could see nothing but dense trees and a sea of black mortarboards. The end of this path led to the stone steps overlooking the sports field. Jiang Yuan guessed something might be happening down on the track. Just as they were debating whether to take a detour, a small robot equipped with thrusters flew high above the crowd toward them, making a very conspicuous entrance. Jiang Yuan looked at the familiar little robot in surprise. "Jason? What are you doing here?" Jason beamed: [I’m here to lead the way for you~] Jiang Yuan blinked. If Jason was here, it meant Xie Chengnan was here too. Realizing the guy had quietly slipped away to attend his graduation, the young master’s cold expression finally softened into something more vivid. Following Jason through the crowd to the edge of the stone steps, Jiang Yuan finally understood what the commotion was about. A massive field of red roses had been laid out on the grass in the center of the sports field. In the middle of the roses stood a tall, handsome man. He looked up, locking eyes with Jiang Yuan instantly amidst the crowded sea of people. The corners of Jiang Yuan’s mouth turned up uncontrollably. His steps felt lighter, as if he were walking on clouds, and he found himself walking faster and faster. Jiang Yuan came to a stop in front of the man, a playful smile on his lips. "Is this a surprise?" Xie Chengnan looked down at the beautiful young man before him. Even after four years together, this person still held a fatal attraction for him. Thinking of what he was about to do, Xie Chengnan’s heart began to accelerate, soon pounding wildly against his ribs. Even his fingers, hanging at his sides, clenched involuntarily. Jiang Yuan sensed his nervousness and felt a bit confused. "What is it?" Xie Chengnan spoke slowly. "I have a graduation gift for you." Jiang Yuan chuckled. "What kind of gift?" Suddenly, a collective gasp erupted from the crowd surrounding the field. "Holy shit! Is that a Gundam?!" Jiang Yuan looked up and froze instantly. A robot, three stories tall, was marching toward them. Its metallic body gleamed under the sunlight, carrying an imposing presence. As the robot reached Xie Chengnan’s back, it suddenly dropped to one knee and extended its mechanical arm. Resting quietly in its open palm was a deep blue velvet jewelry box. Under Jiang Yuan’s stunned gaze, Xie Chengnan took the box and knelt on one knee before him. Man and machine held the same posture—one looking up, one looking down, both focused intently on him. Jiang Yuan’s pupils shrank as he finally realized what Xie Chengnan was doing. The jewelry box was opened by the man’s strong fingers, revealing a simple men’s ring inside—a plain band with a few words faintly engraved on the inner side. Xie Chengnan looked up at his young lover. Because he was so nervous, his voice was tight. "This ring... has been by my side for four years..." Xie Chengnan paused, his lips moving soundlessly for a moment before he said with some frustration, "What do I do... I forgot my proposal speech..." Jiang Yuan couldn't help but let out a low laugh, though his eyes were shimmering with tears. His Professor Xie, who could memorize a thesis in minutes, was kneeling there, telling him piteously that he had forgotten a few short lines of a proposal. He hadn't even managed to maintain his usual calm and steady demeanor. He looked like a flustered youth—anxious, stiff, but with a flame hidden in his eyes that made the person looking down at him feel a searing heat in his chest, as if his very soul were being ignited. Xie Chengnan finally sighed with a smile, abandoning the speech he had revised countless times only to forget at the critical moment. He looked up at the lover he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. "So, baby, will you marry me?" The robot kneeling behind him used the same deep, synthesized mechanical voice to repeat the question: [So, baby, will you marry me?] The surrounding crowd erupted into an uproar, followed by waves of cheering. "Yooooo~~!" "A-Yuan baby, say yes!!!" "Say yes! Say yes!!!" Jiang Yuan’s face flushed slightly as he complained, "You’re forcing my hand." Xie Chengnan’s smile was a bit helpless. "I was afraid you’d reject me." The young master’s lips curled upward as he deigned to extend his left hand. "Fine, I suppose I’ll reluctantly agree." Professor Xie finally slipped the ring onto his lover’s finger, stood up, and pulled him into a tight embrace. Jiang Yuan hugged him back tightly, then whispered after a moment, "Where’s your ring?" The robot behind them extended its other hand, revealing an identical ring box in its palm. Jiang Yuan took the ring and saw a line of text engraved on the inner band: *Love in my life.* He placed it on the middle finger of Xie Chengnan’s left hand, and then, before everyone’s eyes, he kissed his lover’s lips. Soon, someone posted the video to Weibo. [Holy shit! What is that?! A mecha warrior?!] [I’m just asking, whose proposal has this kind of lineup?! CEO Brother really didn't disappoint us!!!] [Does anyone remember A-Yuan’s New Year’s display four years ago?? I really thought that was the peak!! Clearly, there’s no ceiling when this couple drops dog food!!] [As a Nanda student, I can say the school leaders are grinning from ear to ear... because after the CEO Brother’s proposal was accepted, he donated the robot to Nanda!! Not a penny charged!! Donated!!!] [Holy shit! That’s one expensive venue rental fee!!] [I just want to know, is your school open for tours...] [New proposal holy land acquired!!!] Holding Xie Chengnan’s hand, Jiang Yuan concluded his university career amidst various speeches and congratulations. On this day, he turned his lover into his spouse and stepped onto another journey of life by his side. ***
