Back to My Roommate is a Non-Human

The Jealous Guardian

Chapter 48

In the end, we failed to get an appointment at the OB/GYN. Seeing three hulking men trying to check in, the nurses refused to give us a number, convinced we were there to peep at the female patients who weren't wearing underwear. However, we did manage to get into the emergency room. Because Old Chu’s "sons" were running rampant everywhere, the hospital had opened a special clinic specifically to check for parasitic infections. Naturally, no one actually came here for treatment; they were either already dead or had been saved by Zhang Litian or my roommate—and in order to make my roommate take some responsibility for the world, I had endured another fifteen minutes of him. I got the feeling that Zhang Litian didn't want to blow things out of proportion either. Compared to Old Chu’s bizarre offspring, his more direct goals were the crystal skull and my heart. Once inside, the doctor told me to lie down for a B-ultrasound. Since there were no panty-less women to see, Lu Daoshi left in disappointment. Ren Xing stood in the room, looking at my flat stomach with a face full of revulsion, his lips pressed into a thin line. The doctor applied that cold gel to my belly and started scanning my chest. I told him he needed to go a bit lower, just a bit lower, but he shot me a glare. "It’s all in the thoracic cavity." Naturally, scanning the chest revealed nothing. I was just about to say my stomach felt uneasy when he suddenly caught sight of something at the bottom of the screen. "What the hell is that!" The moment he finished speaking, he let out a shriek like a startled dog and bolted out the door. Within ten seconds, he was nowhere to be found! Dammit, at least tell me what the hell it was! Lu Daoshi poked his head back in from outside. "What happened?" I sat stiffly on the bed. "The ultrasound tech saw the thing in my belly and ran for his life." Lu Daoshi stared at the black-and-white screen and asked Ren Xing, who was now the one holding the probe and sliding it across my stomach, "Do you see anything?" The three of us couldn't make heads or tails of it. "Your son can scare a man into flight; just how ugly is he?" "That’s what I’m worried about. He won't stay still in the womb, and who knows what kind of thing he'll be when he's born. If he’s going to kill his father and make me a widow in the future, I want to get rid of him this instant. But no major hospital will help me now; they see the ultrasound and run away. What am I supposed to do?" "There is a way," Ren Xing said suddenly. "That old man who ran the black clinic and trafficked organs—his medical skills are actually quite decent, and he’s currently locked up in our station. All his surgical equipment, including the operating table, is piled up in the evidence room. If you’ve truly made up your mind, I can arrange for him to perform the surgery for you inside the detention center. It might be a bit crude, but at least we can get that thing out of you." He paused, frowning. "Having something like that inside a human body isn't good, no matter how you look at it. Jin Mu was right; those larvae have nothing to do with you. They are purely parasitic. It might be affecting your health." I hesitated but eventually agreed. Ren Xing went back to make the preparations, and we agreed to settle it quickly tomorrow. After he left, it was just me and Lu Daoshi. He kept staring at my stomach. "They say human infants can sense their mother’s thoughts while in the womb. There was this little girl who knew her family wanted a boy and would abort her if they knew she was a girl, so she kept holding up her finger to mimic a penis. Every ultrasound showed a boy, and the parents couldn't have been happier. Then she was born, and they were stunned." "What are you trying to say?" Lu Daoshi’s expression turned grim. " I’m just reminding you that if there really is something in your belly, it’s definitely not something to be trifled with. If you don't want it, you’d better discuss it with your man first. Otherwise, I’m afraid that tomorrow, you, me, Officer Ren, and that doctor combined might not be enough to suppress it. Anything could happen then. Also, Jin Mu might not be trustworthy. No matter how reluctant he seems, he’s still on Zhang Litian’s side. You have to weigh his words carefully." I felt miserable. "I wanted to ask my man this morning who I am and what to do about the thing in my belly, but every time I try to ask, he gets all touchy-feely. Once he’s done, he just pats his ass and leaves. This can't go on." Lu Daoshi gave me a subtle look. "That’s entirely due to your own lack of resolve." How was I lacking resolve? If you got your backside poked and still kept your resolve, I’d admire you. "Speaking of which... Zhang Litian, Old Chu, and all those mess of parasitic creatures are always loitering around here. It’s not sustainable. Is there anything we can do?" Lu Daoshi and I had just reached the central park. He found a long bench, sat down, and pulled out a cigarette. "Isn't your man specialized in cleaning them up?" I gave a dry "oh." My roommate was too unreliable. Half the time he was protecting world peace, and the other half he was washing dishes. He was... how should I put it? It’s not that he had a bad temper, but if he felt it was necessary, he would massacre the God Race. Sometimes he’d get into the rhythm and kill humans along with them. He had absolutely no concept of it, like we were just chopping potatoes. He didn't care if he accidentally destroyed a city; the world clearly wasn't going to be peaceful. So, as a human, I always wanted to remind my fellow citizens to stay alert. "But we certainly can't just sit around and wait for death," Lu Daoshi said, echoing my thoughts. "What’s your plan?" Lu Daoshi shrugged. "Old Chu, Zhang Litian, and that lot—they aren't anything good. Your man isn't anything good either. If they keep messing around on our turf, we’ll fight them to the death. We'll kill them all." Holy crap! I felt Lu Daoshi was being a bit too fierce; there was no stopping him. "They’re the God Race, okay! Setting aside my roommate, Zhang Litian can teleport and create pocket dimensions. His mental attacks deal tons of damage. Even with my roommate here, he’s still prancing around every day. You think you can kill him?!" Lu Daoshi looked at me as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "Damn it, in the past, we had no population and no technology, so it was fine if they played us for fools. But now we have a global population of six billion. We could drown those sons of bitches with our spit. We don't need to fear them. If they don't play fair, they can't blame us for committing deicide." Holy crap! "What, scared? Heh." Lu Daoshi let out a cold laugh. "They still think of us as the primitives from thousands of years ago—they’re blind. Just because we call them gods, they think they can be lawless? They aren't 'God' in the philosophical sense; they’re just life forms that can summon wind and rain and live forever. They just evolved a bit earlier than us, and their tech is a bit more advanced. If we can figure out how they work, the mystery vanishes. Primitives used to think thunder was the wrath of the heavens and lived in constant terror. Do you still find it that mysterious? Now you know it’s just electrical discharge between the earth and the sky. Is there anything strange about it? Exactly. So I’m not afraid of those things at all, nor do I think they’re worth worshipping. They can be understood. I even saw through a microscope that your man doesn't have enzymes. If we slowly learn and explore, we’ll eventually find their weaknesses. If they stay in their lane, fine; if they cross the line, we kill them. Don't be afraid. We humans need to have some backbone. Don't fear them." My Senior Lu was truly the pride of the human race, wasn't he? So badass. If the God Race offends me, I shall commit deicide. If he had a "golden finger" cheat, he could easily be the protagonist of a power-fantasy novel. "Just... don't kill my roommate later." "Your roommate doesn't seem to like meddling, and he’s not a troublemaker. As long as he’s willing to take Zhang Litian and Old Chu back to the Abyss, we’re definitely on his side. I’ll also try my best to look up information on them so we can be prepared. Know yourself and know your enemy." Hearing him say that made me feel much better. However, just how much combat power we actually had against the God Race remained to be seen. That afternoon, when I returned to the dorm, I found a tall, thin, bald man standing in front of my door. He was wearing a long black trench coat with his arms crossed, looking as murderous as could be. His skin was deathly pale, as if he hadn't seen the sun in years, looking neither healthy nor normal. Hearing my footsteps, he looked up and glared at me. His gaze was so fierce it felt like there were cleavers flashing in his pupils. Under that stare, my first instinct was to run. But the moment I turned, I remembered something: my roommate said my dorm was now absolutely safe. No one of the Abyss lineage, including other gods and affiliated creatures, could step foot inside. He had probably set up a barrier or something. Sure enough, the treatment changes after marriage; I felt the security of having a man in the house and a protected bedroom. So... who was this guy who clearly didn't look like a normal person! As he raised his head, I noticed a gear embedded in his collarbone. That must hurt like hell! I couldn't help but wonder how many other random things were stuck into his body under that long black coat. As we stood in a standoff before the door, he pressed closer, forcing me back against the wall, using his tall chest to mock my height. "I am responsible for your safety." Alright, he was my husband’s subordinate. So tall and imposing, with a gaze like a meat cleaver—he immediately gave off a reliable vibe. Having a bodyguard like this was something to be celebrated. Then his next words were: "You piece of dross." Dammit! What’s the grudge?! I started to get angry—how could he speak to the master’s spouse like that? Does the Abyss have no rules?! "Are you an Abyss Guardian?" He took another step forward, practically pinning me against the wall, and said syllable by syllable, "Don't you dare think for a moment that you will ever set foot in the Abyss. You filthy, lowly, stupid, dissolute wretch. You aren't worthy of him in the slightest. The thing you give birth to will be just as lowly, unworthy of being the next God-King of the Abyss." I scoffed. "You lot from down there are way too easy to read. Regardless of how I am, you are absolutely green with envy. If you’re so great, why don't you get him to marry you? Why don't you go and give birth?" His face turned green with rage! It felt so good! His face twitched as if he wanted to hit me. Hit me! Go ahead, hit me! At that moment, my roommate suddenly appeared behind him, holding a container of duck blood vermicelli soup. "What are you doing?" Ah, I couldn't have been more gleeful. The way the bald man turned around perfectly illustrated what it meant to be caught red-handed. Next, it was time for my Big Brother Liu to discipline his subordinate. We "virtuous wives" shouldn't watch, shouldn't watch, hee-hee. Just as I gripped the doorknob, I heard my roommate’s cold voice behind me. "You are the dross." Then came a loud *bang*. Holy crap, they were fighting! My roommate grabbed the Abyss Guardian by the throat and threw him into the ceiling. After the ceiling shattered, the flying Abyss Guardian punched right through the top floor! My roommate held him up with sheer pressure, refusing to let him down. "If I hear that again, I will pierce your eyes, rip out your tongue, break your bones, and turn you into a puddle of oil." ***
