Digital Detectives

Chapter 25

Zhang Jin’an sat in the backseat, watching the dark city skyline and high-rises streak past the window. As was his habit, he used the commute home to log onto Weibo and check in. Being a celebrity, Zhang Jin’an naturally received countless mentions every day. He usually scrolled through a few of the most recent ones. This time, however, the bulk of the notifications weren't comments under variety show clips begging him to participate; instead, they were directed toward a post by the blogger @zrain-. [@BrokeBabyStillBuyingAlbums]: @ZhangJinan As expected of you, sir. Zhang Jin’an raised an eyebrow and clicked the first mention. He knew exactly who "Zrain" was—it was Zhang Shuyu’s fan account. People tagged him under her posts almost every day, usually telling him to come check on his little sister. He was never curious about Zhang Shuyu’s Weibo, though; it was mostly just daily life updates and fansite photos. Aside from the one post she made when she was revealed to be his sister, she hadn't posted a single thing about him, so he had never liked any of her content. But this time, Zhang Shuyu had actually posted something related to Zhang Jin’an, which was a rare occurrence. [@zrain]: [Laughs] I successfully got Siyang’s autograph! Siyang’s handwriting is so cute! I was even lucky enough to talk to him on the phone. Also, I have one question for @ZhangJinan: Brother, are you really that ruthless? Tucking the autograph inside a book? I was wondering why the envelope felt so thick. When I opened the package, I was like: ? [Attached Image]: Four books stacked together. The top one had a fiery red cover with the title *Gray’s Anatomy (Student Edition)* printed in the center. Tucked beneath it was the paper Jiang Siyang had signed that day, with the message: "To Zhang Shuyu, I hope you’re happy every day." Zhang Shuyu already had a large following, and since this post could be found by searching for either Zhang Jin’an or Jiang Siyang, it had garnered over six thousand comments—surpassing ten thousand in total—far more than her usual posts. [@ChatterboxAllure]: I never expected Big Brother to one day be reduced to a delivery man, hahahahahahaha. As for the move of sending books, I can only say it’s classic him. He’s immediately implementing the family motto: "Chase fewer stars, raise more pigs; play fewer games, read more books." [@dSpell]: At first, I was so jealous. Having such a great brother who’d go get an autograph for you... then I saw those four books. In an instant, I realized—okay, my brother isn't so bad after all, hhhh. Big Brother, come here to be beaten (cross that out) to be praised. @ZhangJinan [@PeiZhiyuansWife]: Sigh, as expected of you @ZhangJinan. [@parkmark]: Truly "asks and receives." Isn't this a bit too indulgent? Even if he did mail books (deleting for fifty cents) @ZhangJinan. Aside from those laughing at their "plastic" sibling bond, many others focused on different details, such as Zhang Shuyu’s major. [@PineapplePeisFruitStand]: My god! Not only is the sister beautiful, but she’s also a medical student?? Suddenly I feel so incompetent and humble as a fellow fan. I can only say: Sister, I’m a fan! [@ListenToBigBrotherRaisePigs] replied to [@PineapplePeisFruitStand]: I remember Big Brother saying his sister’s grades were only above average at first, but after she started chasing stars, she worked like crazy to get into a university in the same city as her idol. She ended up becoming a top student with a Gaokao score of 709. [@PineapplePeisFruitStand] replied to [@ListenToBigBrotherRaisePigs]: I’m floored. What kind of god-tier family is this? The big brother is a popular actor, the second sister is definitely beautiful too and is a girlboss inheriting the family business, and the youngest sister is a genius-beauty college student fansite admin! I’m a fan of them all!!! [@GenerousLuoLuoComingToJoinTheFun] replied to [@PineapplePeisFruitStand]: Sister, you certainly have a lot of room in your heart, but me too! Some of Jiang Siyang’s fans focused on something else entirely. Like master detectives, they began to deduce when Zhang Jin’an had obtained the autograph and whether they had missed another major event. Zhang Jin’an noticed that shortly after Zhang Shuyu’s post went up, a comment was pushed to the top. It featured a photo from Jiang Siyang’s last commercial performance. The perspective was from the side of the large screen; on the right, a row of people stood on stage in profile, while on the left, the audience looked up. The photo had clearly been edited: sunlight acted as a dividing line, separating the people on stage from the audience. Everyone else had been grayed out or darkened, with some blurring applied to the foreground. Only two spots remained clear. One was the person on stage holding a microphone, standing slightly ahead of the others. The other was a person wearing a hat, sitting in the second row of the audience. The angle was unique, making it look as if the two were locking eyes. Zhang Jin’an didn't need to think; he knew exactly when and where this was taken. He just hadn't expected it to be dug up here. A small smile played on Zhang Jin’an’s lips. He exited the full-sized image to read the comments. [@YangYangCantBeSmug]: I thought that person looked familiar at the time! I also wondered why there was a segment where Siyang had to guess lines. It all makes sense now—Big Brother was a guest! He was right there! [Zhang Jin’an’s Long Johns] replied to [@YangYangCantBeSmug]: Holy crap! Confirmed by a true fan—that hat! That profile is definitely Big Brother! [Thumbs up] [Thumbs up] Sister, you’re amazing! I can’t believe you spotted this! [@AHeapOfRandomCode_wejhkf] replied to [@YangYangCantBeSmug]: They actually met in private afterward!! Oh my god!! After they followed each other, I was discussing with my roommates how Siyang would "chase his star" online, but it turns out they’ve already gone offline?!!! [@YangYangCantBeSmug] replied to [@AHeapOfRandomCode_wejhkf]: Hhh, sister, you’re worrying too much. Also, I noticed that after Siyang posted that 200-word Weibo, Big Brother liked it. That means Big Brother has been following Siyang’s updates -> maybe they exchanged contact info -> maybe we’ll see them on the same stage soon. Zhang Jin’an stopped reading, deeply impressed by the investigative skills of "fandom girls." They could extrapolate a mountain of information from a single photo. However, if there was this much commotion here, then... Zhang Jin’an left a comment under the post: "You’re welcome. Read more books. Training famous doctors starts with me." Then he exited Zhang Shuyu’s Weibo and searched directly for the name "System-Limited Tuan Yuan." At the same time, he noticed that the number of followers for the #ZhangYangUnstoppable# tag had somehow surpassed ten thousand. Sure enough, Tuan Yuan had seen it and posted a Weibo. It was very short, just a couple of lines. [@System-LimitedTuanYuan]: I’ve lost. I’ve lost completely. Reality is more romantic than fiction. Fate makes me breathless; I applaud it. The comments below were increasing by the day; this post alone already had over five hundred. [@DoubleDownJOJO]: I have hope again for them appearing on a variety show together. [@LuYeZhangShu] replied to [@DoubleDownJOJO]: Forget variety shows. Big Brother probably won't go on one even in a hundred years. Acting together, though, is possible. [@DoubleDownJOJO] replied to [@LuYeZhangShu]: But the gap in their status is too big! Being in the same cast is difficult, and it would take a long time. It’s already great that Siyang could meet his idol. Given his personality, he’ll definitely keep working hard. Let’s not rush things. [@System-LimitedTuanYuan] replied to [@DoubleDownJOJO]: Yes, I think this kind of interaction is enough for me! What I’m starting to worry about is that more and more people are following Zhang-Yang Unstoppable. More people means more trouble. I’m so afraid someone will shove this stuff in their faces. What if they get annoyed? If their relationship sours, Siyang will be so heartbroken. Tuan Yuan was truly different from those other authors. Besides her gentle prose, her behavior on Weibo was very mature and mild-tempered. Back when she was first attacked for writing fanfiction, she hadn't lashed out; instead, she had apologized on Weibo. This was also what had caught Zhang Jin’an’s attention. She was clearly just enjoying herself within her own circle, using cautious nicknames. She was infinitely better than those who carved names into the walls of the Forbidden City, or those who commented about their CP under unrelated videos, or those involved in the Zhai Yaoyan incident. Yet, she was the one apologizing while being attacked, while those others continued their antics. Zhang Jin’an couldn't quite put his finger on the irony of it all. [@PlumBlossomsOnlyInOctober] replied to [@System-LimitedTuanYuan]: Hugs! Tuan Yuan, you’re really too gentle!! Always thinking of Yang-yang! [@System-LimitedTuanYuan] replied to [@PlumBlossomsOnlyInOctober]: October, mwah mwah. Because I’ve been a fan of Yang since his debut, I know exactly how good he is and how hard he’s fought to enter the acting world. I don’t want our mistakes to turn his hope into disappointment. [@PlumBlossomsOnlyInOctober] replied to [@System-LimitedTuanYuan]: Holding you, I know, I know. I think we can find someone to be the moderator for this super-topic, then pin a post saying you can only ship them here and it’s forbidden to do it elsewhere. If anyone breaks the rule, they’re kicked out of the fandom. [@GirlsFrontlineFLG] replied to [@PlumBlossomsOnlyInOctober]: [Thumbs up] As expected of an October fan—ruthless and concise. "That’s a good idea, but who can actually stop the KYs?" Zhang Jin’an muttered under his breath. Li Qiang heard him and asked, "What was that?" "Oh, I’m reciting lines," Zhang Jin’an said. "Oh." Li Qiang glanced at the rearview mirror and continued driving. "I sent your August schedule to your email. Let me know if you want to add or change anything." "Okay," Zhang Jin’an replied. He checked the time; it was nearly eleven. Zhang Jin’an decided to find another story to read. By the time he finished, he should be home. Once there, he’d watch a bit more of *Friday Morning* before heading to bed. Yesterday, he had watched the first, twelfth, and sixty-first episodes of *Friday Morning*. After watching, he truly felt the show was good. The guests were funny, and the editing was cute—especially Jiang Siyang. Zhang Jin’an had discovered many different sides to him. For instance, in the first episode, he thought Jiang Siyang was just a "daze-moe" type, but in the sixty-first episode, his powerful observational and logical skills had left Zhang Jin’an quite impressed. He had seen some of the GIFs of Jiang Siyang from that episode pinned on Tuan Yuan’s profile. The styling for that episode was also excellent; no wonder it was considered a peak performance. While watching, whenever Jiang Siyang learned something new, the bullet comments would flood with: "Is there anything this man *can't* do?" Zhang Jin’an wanted to ask the same thing. Because of all this, Zhang Jin’an was looking forward to meeting Jiang Siyang on the variety show more and more. He couldn't wait to see how surprised the younger man would be. Zhang Jin’an continued searching for stories. Tuan Yuan’s work went without saying; he had read everything she’d updated up to today. She was currently writing about Jiang Siyang trying to find a way to act with him by visiting various film sets. Zhang Jin’an always felt that this story was the exact opposite of reality. He scrolled down further. Because there were so many new followers, there were many new posts. Not knowing where to start, he randomly clicked on one with a decent number of reposts. The moment he opened it, Zhang Jin’an felt like his eyes were failing him. The author had set the font size quite large, but looking across the page, there was hardly any punctuation. Consequently, the otherwise fine words were bunched together in a dense, suffocating mass. And the sentences... Zhang Jin’an squinted and whispered the words aloud, one by one: "Zhang Jin’an’s neck slender yet robust upon which blue veins burst forth a necklace hanging to the T-shaped collarbone high protruding arch where gray-blue irises clear and transparent eyes round as if seeing through others’ hearts thin clouds soaked in moonlight cast into a sharp blade severing his every bit and piece the jawline tracing faint apple muscles round and flushed cheeks right zygomatic bone extending straight into the hair the tear troughs slightly bulging skin delicate with a rising sheen..." Zhang Jin’an couldn't help but wonder: does the author even understand these words? And the first paragraph hadn't even ended yet. He glanced at the rest; there were probably another hundred or so words. But he was Zhang Jin’an—a talented actor who memorized massive blocks of dialogue all the time. Was he really going to be intimidated by this? One second later. "A literary giant, a true literary giant," Zhang Jin’an closed the image. "Okay, next."
