It took nearly an hour to reach the building where Li Zi lived, even with Liu Yan taking several shortcuts.
Along the way, perhaps because Li Zhengting was finally safe, Li Zi had actually fallen asleep in the car. Li Zhengting, however, found it impossible to rest. He traced the dark circles under Li Zi’s eyes, his heart heavy with guilt. He could hardly imagine the turmoil she must have endured throughout the day.
Liu Yan had been observing the two through the rearview mirror. Finally, he couldn't help but speak up. "Brother, you don't look very well. Are you feeling uncomfortable?"
He noticed Li Zhengting frequently rubbing his lower back, the frequency steadily increasing. It made him uneasy.
"Shh, keep it down. Don't worry, I know my body," Li Zhengting whispered. His face was pale as he shook his head at Liu Yan, terrified of waking Li Zi.
The abdominal pains were indeed becoming quite frequent, but he still held onto a sliver of hope. He told himself it was likely just the babies protesting after all the physical exertion he’d been through today. Besides, the sensation felt very similar to the Braxton Hicks contractions he’d experienced before—perhaps just a slightly more painful version.
He was afraid that if he told Li Zi his stomach hurt now, she would be frightened into rushing him to the hospital. They both desperately needed rest; he could endure this small amount of pain.
"Alright then..." Liu Yan pursed his lips and parked the car. "Just make sure you look after yourself, Brother."
"I know."
Five minutes after the car came to a halt, Li Zi opened her eyes. She looked around, and only after seeing Li Zhengting sitting safely beside her did she finally breathe a sigh of relief.
"Are we here?"
"Yes, we've arrived," Li Zhengting nodded.
The brief rest hadn't refreshed Li Zi; instead, her head throbbed even harder. It was likely the aftermath of the intense emotional upheaval she had suffered.
"Let's go upstairs. There’s porridge warming at home."
Li Zi hadn't dared to tell her parents about Li Zhengting’s kidnapping yet, fearing they would panic. Fortunately, she had brought him home safely the very next day; she would explain everything later. Before arriving, she had messaged the family's housekeeper to have food prepared in advance.
Li Zhengting’s body felt heavy and cumbersome. After Li Zi got out, she helped him out of the car. The moment his feet hit the ground, his body stiffened, and his legs instinctively parted a little wider. Li Zi didn't notice; she was busy rummaging through her bag for her keys.
Once inside, they found a pot of lean meat porridge waiting on the dining table. The savory aroma eased Li Zi’s nerves significantly. She pulled Li Zhengting to the table and served a bowl for each of them.
Li Zhengting discreetly adjusted his sitting posture as Li Zi picked up a spoon, ready to feed him.
"Come on, Ting-ge, eat something quickly."
Li Zhengting wanted to do it himself so she could rest, but another wave of contractions tightened across his lower abdomen. He had to use his hand under the table to massage the area just to maintain a calm expression.
"Ah." He obediently opened his mouth.
Li Zi fed him a spoonful of porridge. In truth, he had no appetite; a strange, stifling fullness sat heavy in his chest, and the smell of the meat actually made him feel slightly nauseous. But Li Zhengting knew he had to eat for the sake of the children.
After feeding him, Li Zi finished her own portion in a few quick bites.
"Let's go get some proper sleep. Do you want to shower first?"
"No, I'm too tired." Li Zhengting shook his head, his complexion looking somewhat ghastly.
Li Zi agreed. She helped him undress and propped up several extra pillows on the bed. "Alright, Ting-ge, you sleep first. I'm going to take a quick shower and I'll be right back."
"Okay," Li Zhengting replied.
He watched her leave his line of sight, and only then did his straight back hunch over. He slowly lay down on the bed, rubbing his belly—which was temporarily quiet—and whispered softly, "Babies, stop playing now. Let Daddy and Mommy get some sleep, okay?"
As if they had actually heard him, the children stopped moving. Li Zhengting finally exhaled in relief and closed his tired eyes.
When Li Zi returned, she saw him fast asleep. She let out a long sigh and climbed into bed beside him, her heart filled with gratitude.
She was jolted awake by a low, pained moan.
When she opened her eyes, the sky outside had already darkened. The room was unlit, and all she could hear was the sound of ragged, rapid breathing beside her. Li Zi scrambled up and switched on the bedside lamp.
Li Zhengting was drenched in sweat, clutching a pillow, his legs splayed outward.
Terrified, Li Zi asked, "Ting-ge, what's wrong?"
Seeing that she was awake, Li Zhengting felt as though he had found his lifeline. He released his grip on the pillow and pointed downward, his voice trembling.
"Zi... something's wrong..."
Li Zi immediately leaned down to look where he was pointing. A large wet patch had soaked through his trousers and onto the bedsheets. Her expression turned grim instantly. "Ting-ge, I think your water broke."
"I... I thought so..." Li Zhengting closed his eyes in agony, his body involuntarily bearing down. "I should have guessed."
Li Zi thought back for a moment and quickly pieced everything together. She cursed herself for being so careless and failing to notice his discomfort earlier.
"Ting-ge, when did the contractions start? How are you feeling now?" She lifted his upper body slightly so he could lean against the pillows.
"It started hurting a little back at that place... but I didn't think much of it. It started getting worse on the way back." Li Zhengting felt his abdomen tightening relentlessly, and fear gripped his heart. "When I got out of the car, I felt the babies dropping heavily. I felt nauseous during dinner, too. After you fell asleep, the pain woke me up, but I didn't want to wake you."
"But... I couldn't hold it in anymore."
"Zi, will the babies be okay? It's only been seven months." He grabbed her hands, his terror palpable.
"It'll be okay, everything will be fine. We're going to the hospital right now." Li Zi was also panicking. She found a down jacket, threw it over him, and tried to help him out of bed.
Li Zhengting allowed her to guide his body, but the moment his feet touched the floor, the tearing sensation of the fetal head pressing into his pelvis made him freeze in place.
"I can't... it's too much pressure." His voice shook as he shook his head. "I can't walk."
Li Zi’s heart ached for him, but she couldn't give in. she reached out to touch his stomach; it had dropped significantly. They couldn't wait any longer.
She urged him, "Be good, Ting-ge. Lean on me, I'll carry you. We'll get in the car and go to the hospital immediately."
Li Zhengting was internally resistant, but he let her support him as they shuffled out. Every step felt like his pelvis was being forced further apart. Every time his foot hit the floor was an ordeal. The short walk felt like it took a lifetime.
When he was finally placed in the car, he let out a long, shuddering breath.
However, when Li Zi opened the navigation app, she found that the route to the hospital was entirely red. It was a disaster. Because of the multi-car pileup, several main roads were closed, and it was currently peak rush hour. Driving there herself would take an unknown amount of time.
Li Zi tried calling 120, but the major hospitals nearby all suggested transferring elsewhere. Resources were stretched thin due to the accident, and they advised against coming in.
In the back seat, Li Zhengting was hit by another violent contraction, clutching his seatbelt and nearly screaming.
"Zi—the baby is moving down!"
At that moment, Li Zi felt utterly helpless. What should she do? Did she really have to drive somewhere far away? Could Zhengting even hold on that long?
*No, I have to find another way.*
Suddenly, she thought of her father. She quickly dialed Yan Yan’s number. He picked up on the very last ring, his voice urgent. "Xiao Zi, I'm very busy right now. Let's talk later."
"Dad, no! Li Zhengting is in labor, and the situation is bad. We're in the car, but the hospitals are telling us not to come. Can you find a way?"
"What! Zhengting is in labor? How? It's only been seven months!" Yan Yan was shocked.
"I can't explain it all now. Dad, what do we do?"
"Xiao Zi, you must know about the car accident today. Many of the injured have been sent to various hospitals for emergency surgery. We're even running low on anesthesiologists. I have to start another surgery immediately. Zhengting really might not be able to get into a hospital."
"Then what do we do?" Hearing even Yan Yan say this, Li Zi began to feel despair.
"Listen. I'll see if the Director of Obstetrics is still here. I'll find a doctor and have her contact you immediately. Whatever you do, don't take him out on the road. If you get stuck in traffic, it'll be a real disaster."
"I heard their department has been researching home births recently. Zhengting might have to do that today. His previous checkups were all normal, right? Get him into a warm bath quickly and wait for the call."
"Alright, I have to go into the OR. Wait for it—I will definitely find a doctor to contact you."
The background noise on Yan Yan’s end was chaotic. Li Zi could imagine the state of the hospital. She could only agree. "Okay, Dad, you have to be fast."
"I will. Don't panic. Zhengting only has you to rely on now." Yan Yan hung up reluctantly, his heart filled with worry. *What on earth happened?*
"Ting-ge, we have to go back. We can't make it to the hospital." Li Zi put her phone in her pocket and turned to Li Zhengting.
"What?" Li Zhengting, his consciousness blurred by pain, felt himself breaking down at the news. "I have to walk back? Zi, I can't do it."
"I feel the baby's head is already there... I can't walk." He shook his head frantically, desperate to change her mind.
Li Zi’s heart was breaking. She went to the back door to help him out. "Ting-ge, you can't give birth in the car."
Tears were streaming down Li Zhengting’s face. He bit his lip, looking at her pleadingly, shaking his head.
Ultimately, Li Zi carried him back into the house and into the bathroom.
...
With the help of a doctor’s remote instructions, Li Zi and Li Zhengting successfully welcomed their eldest daughter in the bathroom. However, Li Zhengting fainted from exhaustion while delivering the second twin.
Outside, there was a knock at the door. The ambulance had arrived.
