Inside the ambulance, the doctor took the infant aside for an examination.
With the help of the medical staff and equipment, Li Zhenting gradually regained consciousness, only to be greeted once more by a surging wave of labor pains.
Fortunately, after the medical staff learned of his unique constitution, they had Li Zi attempt to inject him with pheromones. Finally, the doctor performed an episiotomy, and the second child finally made his long-awaited appearance.
The second child was a boy.
His body was noticeably smaller and thinner than his older sister’s. When he was born, his skin was a purplish-blue, and his wailing was so faint it was barely audible.
Under the joyful yet anxious gazes of Li Zhenting and Li Zi, the doctor whisked the infant away for emergency treatment.
Li Zhenting, whose lower body was strictly forbidden from moving, was so frantic he nearly climbed off the bed to follow them.
“Ting-ge, don’t move!”
Li Zi hurried to hold him down, saying, “Careful of your stitches.”
Li Zhenting truly had no strength left; he was completely unable to break free from Li Zi’s hands. He gripped her sleeve desperately and asked, “Zi, what’s wrong with the baby?”
“It’s alright. You stay here and rest, be good. I’ll go and ask.”
Even though he was extremely weak, Li Zhenting could not calm down. He lay on the bed, his body covered in sweat and bloodstains. As the doctor came to perform the remaining sutures, he could only watch as Li Zi walked away. He couldn't even bring himself to care about his own wounds.
The younger brother was placed in an incubator for close observation. The older sister, however, was able to stay by their side. Once the pain medication took effect, Li Zhenting finally succumbed to exhaustion and fell asleep.
The next day, Li Shian and Yan Yan rushed over. Upon learning what had transpired, they felt a deep ache in their hearts—both for the suffering Li Zhenting had endured and for the two children.
It was only after the doctor reported that the baby’s condition was stable that Li Zhenting finally felt somewhat relieved and lay obediently in bed to recover.
He handed the infant in his arms to the eagerly waiting Li Shian and Yan Yan, saying, “This is the older sister.”
Li Shian carefully picked up the child. Looking at that still-wrinkled little face, his heart brimmed with love.
“Have you two picked out names for the children yet?”
Li Zi and Li Zhenting exchanged a look, then nodded. “We aren't in a rush for their formal names, but we’ve decided on their nicknames.”
Yan Yan teased the baby with his finger and asked with interest, “What are they?”
“The sister is called Xiao Lizi.” Li Zhenting looked at his child with tenderness.
“The brother is called Xiao Ting.” Li Zi tidied the things on the bed, helping to tuck the blanket around Li Zhenting.
The two elders understood immediately. These were nicknames meant to show off their love for one another.
It was wonderful. Fortunately, everyone was safe in the end.
At noon, Liu Yan and Yu Tianwu arrived in a hurry. When Yu Tianwu heard what had happened from Liu Yan, she was frightened out of her wits.
She burst into Li Zhenting’s ward and blurted out, “Li Zizi, are you guys okay? Is Li Zhenting okay? Are the babies okay?”
Having not heard such a clamorous voice in a long time, Li Zi actually found herself feeling a bit nostalgic. She placed her index finger to her lips, signaling for her to be quieter as the baby had just fallen asleep.
Liu Yan stepped forward, pulling Yu Tianwu back as he went to check on Li Zhenting.
“Brother, you’ve worked hard.”
He had known Li Zhenting’s state wasn't right yesterday, but he never expected him to go into premature labor.
“It’s fine, it’s all in the past now.” Li Zhenting shook his head, telling him not to worry. He beckoned the two of them closer so they could see the baby.
When Liu Yan saw the infant sleeping quietly in his elder brother’s arms, he felt a momentary sense of unreality. His fierce, hot-tempered brother had suddenly become a father.
Yu Tianwu, on the other hand, leaned in eagerly to examine the infant, her eyes fixed on the child. “Li Zizi, your baby is a little wrinkled.”
Li Zi tapped her on the head and said displeasuredly, “She hasn't filled out yet.”
“Oh...” Yu Tianwu drew out the word, then asked, “Where’s the other one?”
“Still in the incubator. You can come to our house to see him when there's a chance later; it’s not convenient to visit him right now.”
“Mhm, mhm, the baby’s health is most important.” Yu Tianwu nodded, then added, “The father’s health is important too. Li Zizi, you have to take good care of them.”
“I know.” Li Zi chuckled, her gaze like a lake quietly reflecting the moonlight—serene, soft, and warm. She sat beside Li Zhenting, helping him hold the child so he could rest for a while.
“It’s so nice.” Yu Tianwu looked at the family, her heart full of envy. She tugged at Liu Yan’s hand, about to sigh in admiration to him, but then she noticed that Liu Yan’s expression was somewhat downcast.
She suddenly realized something.
She quickly tried to make amends. “Yan-ge, I think the two of us are doing pretty well like this, too.”
“Yeah.” Liu Yan responded softly, tightening his grip on her hand without saying anything more.
