A Tense Reunion

Chapter 15

Although she was supposed to be sleeping, it was impossible to truly rest in such a situation. Que Tang had only closed her eyes for a short while before a violent pounding echoed against the warehouse’s iron door, accompanied by a cacophony of voices. "Open up, whoever's inside!" "Please, open the door!" "Ah—help!" Que Tang tried to get up, but Que Lan held her down. "I'll open it." Que Tang grabbed her, frowning and shaking her head. The two locked eyes for a few seconds as the cries for help outside grew louder. Wasting no more time, they moved to the door together. Que Tang stood to the side, iron rod raised, while Que Lan prepared to open it. Three, two, one. Que Lan counted down with her hand, then unlocked and threw open the iron door. "The door's open!" "Quick, get inside!" A crowd rushed into the warehouse in a chaotic, disorderly swarm—men, children, women, and the elderly. "Hurry and close the door!" those who entered first shouted. "There’s a massive horde of zombies out there!" "No, Mr. Ouyang is still outside! Sister, please, wait for him!" "What are you talking about? There’s a whole swarm out there, you can't kill them all! He’s a dead man. Do you want us all to be buried with him?" A man shouted, charging forward viciously to shove Que Lan aside and close the door. Que Tang was quick, kicking him away and stepping in front of Que Lan, glaring at the group. The men from earlier had also slipped into the warehouse. Finally, a man in white, drenched in blood, ran in disheveled. "Quick, close the door! There’s no one else left." Que Lan slammed the door shut and bolted it. Simultaneously, she felt a wave of warmth press against her back. As she instinctively moved to dodge, her hand was firmly grasped. Turning her head, she saw her sister still guarding her with the iron rod, watching the crowd warily. A strange sensation flickered in her heart. Sensing that such an emotion was dangerous, she chose not to dwell on it. She looked toward the group to ask about the situation outside, but her eyes widened the moment they landed on the man in white. It was him! The world was truly small. Now that the male and female leads were both present, the script for her revenge could finally begin. A slight curve touched the corners of Que Lan’s lips. Que Tang looked at the words "Male Lead of This World" floating in large letters above the man’s head and thought her luck was incredible. She had just been worrying about where to find him in this vast world, and here he was. It really was a case of "finding it without any effort at all." When the man saw the two sisters, his expression shifted from shock to joy. "Que Lan, Xiao Tang! You’re alive!" "I came from City A to find my sister. Why are you here, Aotian?" Que Lan responded flatly. Que Tang’s eye twitched at the name. *Seriously? Is this system’s taste in stories just a collection of male leads named 'Aotian'?* "I happened to be here on a business trip. This all started on my third day," Ouyang Aotian said with a warm, joyful smile. "I met these people on the way out and organized a survival group so we could look out for one another." Que Tang raised an eyebrow. So, he was the "warm-hearted hero" type. Behind her, a flash of disdain crossed Que Lan’s eyes. *Survival group?* She hadn't forgotten how greedy and cowardly these people were in her past life. When it was time to escape the University Town, they had preferred to stay behind and wait for a rescue that would never come, forcibly keeping most of the gathered supplies and leaving the sisters with only a pittance of food and water. Seeing that Ouyang Aotian knew the two women, the crowd seemed to relax. They huddled together, pulling food and water from their bags. Que Tang and Que Lan remained by the door, neither approaching nor intending to integrate. After a moment of thought, Que Tang took out a pen and paper. She wrote: *Sister, where are we going next?* and handed it to Que Lan. Que Lan took the pen and wrote: *I heard from some people on my way here that the government has established a temporary shelter in City B. I think we should head there to check the situation.* As she finished the last stroke, a dark sense of gratification rose within her. In her previous life, they had also gone to City B. But by then, the situation was dire; the number of infected was rising, the base's infrastructure was insufficient, and the leaders were cowardly. Eventually, the zombies gathered outside the shelter outnumbered the military. The leaders ordered an evacuation but abandoned the civilians. It was then, due to accidental injury by a companion, that the different color of her blood exposed her as a zombie. Her "dear" sister and her "good" neighbor had put on a performance together. On the surface, they claimed not to care and accepted her, but the moment she let her guard down, her sister drove a knife into her heart while this man blew her head off with a close-range gunshot. This time, she would take these two back to City B and let them experience the same agony she felt amidst the zombie tide. "Meow~ The supporting character’s psychopathy value has increased by nine. Current index: ten. Host, what did you do?" Que Tang’s hand shook, nearly dropping the notebook. Under her sister’s currently inscrutable, "caring" gaze, she forced a smile to show she was fine. *I just asked where we were going. Who knows what she’s imagining now? Wait, aren't you the system? Aren't you supposed to be omniscient?* "Meow~ I know, of course. But where’s the fun in that? I can give the Host a hint, though: in your last life, you all went to City B together, and the supporting character became cannon fodder during the zombie outbreak there." *If I hadn't asked, were you just never going to tell me such an important plot point?!* "If the Host doesn't ask, how can I say anything? Meow~ It’s dried fish time, I’m leaving. Good luck, Host! Meow!" No matter how much Que Tang called out after that, there was no response. She resentfully resolved that once the mission was over, she would make sure her future children pulled on that cat's whiskers and never let go. *City B? Just the two of us? What about Brother Ouyang?* Que Lan saw things moving smoothly in the direction she desired. Narrowing her eyes, she wrote: *We’ll ask him in a bit.* As Que Tang put away the notebook, she noticed out of the corner of her eye a few men sitting in a corner. They didn't belong to their group or Ouyang Aotian’s. They were clutching weapons. She quietly tugged on her sister’s sleeve, alerting her. "Sister... they... I think they have guns." This realization made Que Tang nervous. Her "cheat" only enhanced her physical constitution—making her faster and stronger than average—but it didn't make her bulletproof. Moreover, this world didn't seem to have "special abilities," making firearms extremely lethal weapons. Que Lan suddenly reached out and brushed a stray lock of hair from her sister’s eyes. Using the movement as cover, she whispered into her ear, "Stay to the side and don't do anything. We’ll wait and see." After confirming everyone was alright, Ouyang Aotian was about to head over to catch up with the Que sisters. Suddenly, a scream erupted from behind him. The men they had encountered at the supermarket entrance had seized a child from their group. "Quick, hand over all your food and water!" the leader, Old A, shouted, pressing a gun against the child’s head. However, the rest of the group remained indifferent, making no move to help, save for the child’s mother, who was crying and screaming hysterically. "Do you think I’m joking?" Old A raised his hand and slammed the butt of the gun into the child’s head, knocking him unconscious before tossing him to the men behind him. He then aimed the pistol at the crowd. Only then did they begin to panic. "Everyone, take out your food and water first. Exchange them for the child," Ouyang Aotian said solemnly. "We worked hard to find these, and there’s barely anything left. If we give it all to them, we’re just waiting to die," someone grumbled. Others chimed in with agreement. Only the mother immediately pulled out all her food, weeping and begging the others to save her child. The Que sisters stood by the door, quiet as shadows. Que Lan watched with disdain, but she was surprised that her sister hadn't impulsively rushed forward. In her previous life, Que Tang had always stood by Ouyang Aotian to protect others, never realizing that most people were selfish and only cared for themselves. Furthermore, that useless sense of justice had given them an excuse to "kill for the greater good" once they discovered she was a zombie. Yes, she was a zombie. But what had she done? she was merely a creature who had been betrayed and turned into something even she loathed. Yet her sister, whom she had cared for and protected with all her heart, had killed her in the name of "justice." The memory of her past agony turned Que Lan’s eyes a furious red. She had to clench her fists to restrain herself. If she didn't, she feared she would kill everyone in the room right then and there. But that would be too easy on them. Their lack of reaction had already been noticed by those watching them. The man Que Tang had injured earlier limped forward, dragging his wounded leg and pointing a gun at them. "Heh, didn't expect another girl. What a catch." A murderous glint appeared in Old B’s eyes. "I told you to come with us earlier. Did you really have to wait until we pulled out the guns to submit?" Que Tang frowned, stepping forward like she was facing a great enemy to block her sister, her grip tightening on the iron rod. "You think that stick is going to help?" He waved the gun, pressing it against Que Tang’s forehead. He used his left hand to stroke her cheek, pinching it twice. "Tsk tsk, such nice skin." He let go, intending to do the same to Que Lan, but Que Tang suddenly grabbed his right hand, twisted it, and snatched the gun. This time, she showed no mercy, kicking and breaking his shin. He collapsed to his knees, howling. The gun was now pressed against his head. "B-Boss..." Old B cried out in pain and terror. Old A turned around, and seeing his useless subordinate captured, his eyes narrowed. He raised his gun and shot Old B without hesitation. The blood spraying from Old B’s body stained Que Tang’s clothes. Her mouth fell open as she tried to scream, but no sound came out. The others in the room had already descended into panicked confusion. "He was just a burden. Better to die early and suffer less," Old A said coldly, glancing at the corpse. He then pointed his gun at Que Tang. "You, drop the gun. You’re the first one who’s dared to play us like that." Que Tang hesitated for a moment, and Old A immediately turned and shot someone nearby. She instantly raised her hands, tossed the gun behind her, and stepped forward. Old A relaxed and walked up, intending to grab Que Tang. Suddenly, a gun emerged from behind her, pointing straight at him. "What do you think you’re doing to my sister?" Que Tang’s life belonged to her; only she was allowed to harm her. Old A immediately raised his hands and dropped his gun. "Get down." He obeyed and bent his knees. However, as he crouched, he suddenly reached out and grabbed Que Tang’s calf, pulling her down. Just as he reached for the gun, Que Tang delivered a powerful kick that sent him flying into the wall. "..." Que Tang. "..." Ouyang Aotian. "..." Everyone else. Que Lan calmly aimed her weapon at the three remaining lackeys. "We’re sorry! It was all our fault! Don't kill us!" The three immediately dropped their clubs and knelt. "Meow~ Male lead’s favorability toward the supporting character has increased by thirty. Current favorability: sixty." Que Tang didn't react. The crowd pulled plastic ties used for bundling goods from a corner of the warehouse and bound the four men. After searching them to ensure they had no other weapons, they tossed them into a corner. Que Tang had been clutching Que Lan’s hand tightly since the incident. She had never witnessed such a scene, let alone seen someone killed right in front of her. Even if this was just a mission, she couldn't remain indifferent. Sensing her sister’s distress and assuming she was remembering the scene of their parents' death, Que Lan frowned and pulled her into a firm embrace. After calming the crowd, Ouyang Aotian stepped forward to check on them. "Is Xiao Tang okay?" He reached out to pat her shoulder but was blocked. Que Tang huddled deeper into Que Lan’s arms. "She’s fine." Ouyang Aotian nodded understandingly. If not for the sisters' bravery, they wouldn't know what their situation would be right now. "What are your plans for later?" Que Lan, preoccupied with her sister’s state, had momentarily forgotten the decision she had made. Being reminded of it now, she hesitated for a moment. But her long-accumulated hatred drove her to say: "We are going to the shelter in City B." At that moment, her sister’s grip on her tightened, as if she were terrified Que Lan would disappear.
