The car maintained its high speed, the planes trailing closely behind, seemingly hesitant to act because Frataski was still "under her control."
Que Tang stared out the window, finally spotting what she had been waiting for in the nearby woods.
"If the mission fails here, the consequences will be severe," Emily frowned, uttering a curse for the first time in her life.
"Don't worry. I will do everything in my power to help you achieve what you want," Que Tang turned to her with a gentle smile. Her left hand affectionately brushed the back of Emily’s head, sliding down to her ear to softly knead the lobe.
Emily blushed. "Stop messing around." Just as she spoke, her expression shifted. Countless cars had suddenly appeared ahead, blockading the highway. "What’s going on?" She slammed on the brakes and jerked the steering wheel, veering off to the side.
"That’s the rebel insignia," Que Tang pointed to the eagle claw on the vehicles. "Drive straight toward them."
Though confused, Emily did as she was told, steering back onto the highway toward the convoy. From the countless glints of light on the windshields, it was clear the other side was on high alert. When they were about ten meters away, Emily stopped, and a voice finally rang out from the opposition.
"Pass."
Que Tang opened the door and stepped out, her hands raised high. In her right palm was the card she had retrieved from the library.
The man stared at Que Tang for a few moments before bursting into laughter. "Look at this—the Federation’s Valkyrie has come to defect to us." A wave of laughter rippled through the crowd.
"That’s not what Ilk said." Que Tang’s eyes pinned the man like a hawk. "Is the equipment ready? The Federation army is right behind us. The nearest military district is less than twenty kilometers away."
"It’s all in the back. The mecha unit you asked for is here too, though it’s only a small squad of thirty," the man replied seriously, no longer joking upon hearing the rebel leader's name.
"That’s enough. I shouldn't need to explain the mission again. I will lead the squad to hold them off here. You must get Her Excellency to the spaceship as quickly as possible and depart for the colony."
The man nodded. With a gesture, he signaled his men to step forward and receive Emily. Que Tang followed the man into the woods, where the mechas were already waiting.
Que Tang looked at the mechas—machines so old they were practically antiques—and gave a half-smile. "These are the same practice models I used back in the military academy. The rebels really are poor."
"You know the Federation doesn't use mechas against us; these are just for emergencies," the man explained, his eyes filled with admiration for Que Tang.
If Que Tang hadn't insisted that mechas should never be used against the rebels—who were fellow civilians—their hideouts would have been leveled long ago. The fact that they could maintain a conflict using only traditional thermal weapons for so many years was largely because the Federation needed a lawless "gray zone" to contain problematic elements.
But the extraterrestrial species were different. Whether they were Federation citizens or rebels, they would unite to resist whenever they encountered them.
"I suppose I’m making an exception for you this time." Que Tang grabbed the railing at the back, climbing up with practiced ease. She opened the cockpit and slid inside.
Standing within the cockpit, she felt a surge of nostalgia, remembering everything about her time at the academy with Emily, and...
"Valkyrie, the Federation mechas have appeared!" a shout came from outside.
Que Tang had no more time for idle thoughts. She immediately donned the neural controllers and powered up the mecha. A floating particle screen flickered to life before her, projecting the world outside.
"Mecha startup complete. Synchronization rate with pilot: 100%," a flat, electronic voice announced.
She tested her movements; the machine responded as smoothly as her own limbs. Her heart overflowed with the will to fight as she commanded, "Advance."
After being escorted out of the car, Emily showed a look of shock for the first time.
"Little Mushroom, the plot has deviated."
"The host seems to have discovered an anomaly and has self-altered the script. Meow."
"So she noticed after all... even though we were only one step away."
"Meow. Should I wipe the host's memory and restart the script?"
"The Valkyrie has appeared! As expected of the First Soldier with a 98% synchronization rate!" The exclamation from beside her interrupted her thoughts.
Emily turned to watch the figure charging headlong into the swarm of Federation mechas.
"Since when could mechas perform ancient Eastern martial arts?" The rebels watched in stunned silence, as if they were at the cinema. Que Tang’s mecha moved with fluid agility through the enemy ranks—elbow strikes, leg sweeps—toppling a massive swath of enemies in an instant.
It shattered everyone's perception that mechas could only attack with machine guns and beam sabers.
However, despite her initial advantage, the strain grew as the Federation continuously deployed reinforcements. The rebel mechas were insufficient to begin with, and Que Tang’s physical stamina was not infinite. Seeing Emily still standing in place, she shouted in fury, "What are you doing? Go, now!"
The rebels snapped out of it and hurried into motion.
"Your Excellency, please come with us."
"No, wait—what are you doing? This isn't what I discussed with your leader." Seeing Que Tang holding the line alone, Emily frowned, refusing to leave.
"Lady Que Tang demanded that we escort you to the colony. She will hold back the Federation forces. Please, do not hesitate."
Que Tang had originally intended only to disable the mechas and end it there; she had no desire to truly harm these Federation soldiers. But faced with endless reinforcements, she helplessly raised the mecha’s rifle and fired, commanding: "Formation A3! Defense mechas to the front, attack mechas use projectiles!"
Even though she was the Federation’s most experienced commander, a thirty-man unit couldn't hold out for long. Catching a glimpse of Emily still refusing to go, she raised her left hand and punched a series of numbers into the holographic keyboard on her wrist.
Emily’s watch chimed. The rebels looked at her hesitantly, but she answered without a second thought.
"Fra, whatever you want to do, I will support you. Wasn't it your wish to become the Federation Prime Minister? Don't hesitate anymore. Go with the rebels."
Que Tang’s voice rang in her ear. Emily’s violet eyes stared fixedly at the distant mecha. "Que Tang... you..."
"For this mission, I have the memories of the original female lead, plus my own... I don't know what you're trying to do, but even if the result is death, I won't hesitate. Because this is what I owe you," Que Tang said tenderly. "Being able to see you again has made me happy enough. Whatever you want, I will help you achieve it. So, go."
A massive explosion erupted ahead. The Federation army had begun dropping bombs, and the rebel mechas were mostly destroyed.
"Don't hesitate anymore. I can't hold on much longer. Fra." Her voice was laced with urgency and heavy breathing.
"I... I... I won't..." Emily’s eyes welled with tears. "I won't! Tangtang, don't do this, please?"
The rebels nearby watched in bewilderment as the usually calm and cold Excellency wept, pleading with the Valkyrie.
Seeing that persuasion was failing, Que Tang directly ordered the rebels to take her by force.
The man who had first approached her immediately ordered his men to knock Emily unconscious, load her into the car, and retreat.
Only after they were far away did Que Tang allow a smile to surface. In her right hand, she held a button. It was the trigger for the explosives. While she was taking down the enemy mechas earlier, she had planted bombs on them. Once those mechas returned to the rear for repairs, she would press the button, triggering a chain reaction of explosions that would take her life along with them.
Que Tang took one last look at the departing convoy and whispered softly, "Mu Yao, goodbye."
Then, she charged into the thick of the Federation mechas and pressed the button without looking back.
In an instant, everything within a twenty-kilometer radius was reduced to scorched earth. No life remained.
"Meow. Host's voluntary sacrifice complete. Mission successful. Soul fragment fusion complete. System mission finished. Returning to the female lead's original world."
The unconscious Emily suddenly snapped her eyes open. Her violet eyes stared blankly into the void. Time and space stood still, and her surroundings turned into a pitch-black expanse.
She slowly floated up, suspended in mid-air.
"Rebirth mission complete. Authority to dominate the system granted. Free travel through time and space enabled. Meow."
The next moment, the scene shifted back to Que Tang’s residence within the system.
Emily had transformed into the appearance of Qi Ruolan. She got out of bed, changed her clothes, and went to the kitchen to prepare a simple breakfast, packing it into thermal containers. Then, she opened the front door—one that hadn't existed in the original residence—walked to the door opposite hers, and pressed the buzzer.
After a short wait, the door opened. Upon seeing the person behind the door, she curled her lips into a gentle smile.
"Good morning. You haven't had breakfast yet, have you? I made extra, so I brought some for you." She lifted her right hand, swaying the bag in her grip.
