A Different Treatment

Chapter 84

A day after Zhang Jin’an returned to the set, Ge Xianxu also came back. Her return made Yuan Yuan the happiest person there. Since Yuan Yuan was off that day and not on set, she had been incessantly calling out "Xiao Ge-ge" in the group chat, constantly checking in on her. Ge Xianxu explained the situation in detail to everyone—her father had a fracture and would be bedridden for half a month. Her mother had rushed back from Hunan, so there was someone to look after him now. Everyone offered their well-wishes for her father’s speedy recovery. Ge Xianxu also made a point to thank Jiang Siyang and Yuan Yuan specifically, saying she had caused them trouble and would treat them to a meal another day. Jiang Siyang replied: "No need. It was a special circumstance, after all. Helping each other out is only right." Heaven only knew how satisfied Zhang Jin’an felt when he saw Jiang Siyang’s reply. He didn't mean to belittle anyone; it was just human nature to compare one's own standing in someone else's heart. The more "official" Jiang Siyang’s attitude was toward others, the more it highlighted how differently he treated Zhang Jin’an. This was a wonderful thing. How could he not be happy? Consequently, Zhang Jin’an was in top form during filming that day, earning continuous praise from Director Tang Shang. Two days later, all the residential and outdoor scenes were finished. The production successfully moved its base of operations from the neighborhood to a green screen studio. Although Jiang Siyang had fewer scenes overall, he had the most action sequences among them. Almost all of them involved "taking flight," which meant he had to be in a wire harness for several days straight. Zhang Jin’an knew exactly what that felt like. The height wasn't the most lethal part of wire-work; it was the way the safety harness dug into you. After a full day, if your clothes were too thin, your inner thighs and waist would be covered in red welts and bruises. Furthermore, action scenes weren't just about moving in a straight line; they involved maneuvers. If the movement required a spin, the two suspension wires would twist together, making the constriction even more agonizing. He had already asked Li Qiang to prepare some ointment and had been looking for a chance to give it to Jiang Siyang, but he hadn't found the right opening. He didn't know what was going on lately—it was like a jinx. Every time he went to find Jiang Siyang, either he would be called away by Director Tang halfway through, or Jiang Siyang would be busy. On the rare occasion they did manage to chat, they would get so caught up in the conversation that he’d completely forget about the medicine. Zhang Jin’an sat gloomily in his chair, watching Jiang Siyang from a distance as he stood there letting the stylist adjust his costume. For this scene, Jiang Siyang was back in his long blonde hair. The short bangs on his forehead had been styled into a slight curve. This wig was even longer than the one used for the promotional photos, reaching all the way down to his waist. Jiang Siyang was wearing a black short-sleeved shirt with the wire harness already strapped around his waist. He waited until the wires were ready before putting on his chestnut-colored trench coat. No matter how many people passed in front of Zhang Jin’an, he remained unmoved. His eyes were fixed solely on Jiang Siyang. He truly never tired of looking at him. How could someone’s appearance hit every single one of his preferences so perfectly? Not too much, not too little—just right. As Zhang Jin’an watched, a large hand suddenly appeared right in front of his face. Only then did Zhang Jin’an look at Li Qiang beside him. "What?" Li Qiang withdrew his hand and clicked his tongue. "What do you mean, 'what'? I told you to watch your expression. Your eyeballs are about to fall out. You’re still trying to hide it? Anyone could tell you like him." Zhang Jin’an stared at Li Qiang for a few seconds before looking back at Jiang Siyang. This time, however, he covered his mouth with his hand, making it look like he was deep in thought. Watching the stylist’s hand brush past Jiang Siyang’s neck, Zhang Jin’an remarked, "I’m jealous. I want to be a stylist too." Li Qiang: "I recall you saying yesterday that you wanted to be Xie Jie." Zhang Jin’an nodded thoughtfully. "On second thought, being Xie Jie is better. An assistant gets to stay close to the artist." Li Qiang: "...Like hell it is." Zhang Jin’an was naturally joking. He burst into laughter at Li Qiang’s irritable response. Li Qiang chuckled a bit too, then continued, "Back to business. Did you give him that medicine yet?" Zhang Jin’an’s smile gradually faded. He said in a low voice, "No." Li Qiang was surprised. "Still haven't? How many days has it been? If you wait any longer, he’ll have wrapped his scenes." He clicked his tongue again, eyeing Zhang Jin’an. "You’re not being shy, are you?" Zhang Jin’an shook his head decisively. "Not at all. It’s impossible for me to be shy." "Tsk." Li Qiang’s face was written over with "I don't believe you." Ignoring Li Qiang’s look, Zhang Jin’an continued, his tone turning a bit dejected. "I’ve tried to find him lately, but for some reason, I keep getting interrupted. I was just thinking about that." After hearing this, Li Qiang fell silent. A moment later, he looked at Zhang Jin’an seriously and said, "You..." Zhang Jin’an perked up his ears. "Me..." Li Qiang: "Could you be going through Mercury Retrograde?" Zhang Jin’an: "..." Zhang Jin’an was silent for a few seconds before replying, "That’s it?" Li Qiang: "What else did you expect?" "I thought you’d have some good advice, but that’s it? Honestly, Qiang-ge," Zhang Jin’an expressed his disdain, "you actually believe in that stuff?" Li Qiang found that odd. "Don't you? Haven't you reposted those 'Lucky Koi' posts on Weibo before?" "The Lucky Koi and Mercury Retrograde are two different things," Zhang Jin’an said with a straight face. "As long as I don't repost anything related to Mercury Retrograde, it doesn't exist for me." Li Qiang: "..." Li Qiang’s eyes widened. He gritted his teeth and said, "That’s it? Zhang Jin’an, how do you have the nerve to criticize me?!" Li Qiang’s expression was truly hilarious. Zhang Jin’an was dying of laughter, stomping his feet. It took several bouts of chuckling before he finally stopped. "I’m heading over now. You keep resting, Qiang-ge." With that, Zhang Jin’an left his seat and walked toward Jiang Siyang. "How did you guys get so tall? What did you eat growing up?" the stylist asked while adjusting Jiang Siyang’s collar. To accommodate the stylist’s height, Jiang Siyang had already taken a wide stance, yet he was still slightly taller than the stylist. Jiang Siyang replied honestly, "I don't know. I eat everything." "You don't gain weight?" the stylist asked again. "I do, so I exercise frequently," Jiang Siyang replied. Stylist: "Oh..." Jiang Siyang: "..." Stylist: "..." "Tsk, tsk, tsk." Jiang Siyang looked toward Liu Wenping, who had made the sound. Liu Wenping stood nearby, wearing a red women's suit. The long sleeves and trousers were a vibrant, solid red, paired with black stiletto heels. She looked both glamorous and efficient. Liu Wenping shook her head. "Siyang, with your 'straight-man' conversation skills, you’d better be careful or you’ll never get a girlfriend." "What’s wrong?" Jiang Siyang asked, puzzled. He thought his answers were perfectly normal. "It’s just so awkward," Liu Wenping said, crossing her arms. "How have you managed to stay just as awkward with the girls on set after a whole month as you were the day you met them?" "Am I?" Jiang Siyang asked. "Yes, very," Liu Wenping said. She lifted a strand of Jiang Siyang’s blonde wig and let it fall naturally. The wig was well-made; every strand looked like real hair. "The most fatal part is that you haven't even realized it," Liu Wenping added. "Actually, Siyang gets along well with us. It’s just that he’s so polite to everyone that we feel embarrassed to joke around with him," the stylist chimed in to help. "Siyang, tell me, will I ever live to see the day I have to handle a dating scandal for you?" Liu Wenping asked. Jiang Siyang actually smiled. "It’s hard to say. I’ll just let nature take its course." Liu Wenping thought about it and nodded. "Fine, fair enough. You can't predict these things. With your personality, if you liked someone, you’d probably just say it. If you really wanted to date, it wouldn't take long. But if you do get into a relationship, you have to tell me first. Don't let it drop out of nowhere so the company’s PR can't handle it in time. Did you see that entertainment news recently? They tried to play up a fake romance but the PR botched it, and they lost a ton of fans." "Mm," Jiang Siyang nodded. Liu Wenping felt relieved. She knew Jiang Siyang; as long as she brought something up, he would take it to heart. The stylist draped a scarf around Jiang Siyang and asked, "Ah, but Siyang, you’re already twenty-five or twenty-six. Don't your parents nag you about marriage?" Jiang Siyang thought for a moment and replied, "My dad is fine. He’s busy entertaining himself, so he’s not in a rush." "What about your mom? Is she not worried either?" the stylist asked. "That..." Liu Wenping glanced at Jiang Siyang, about to answer for him, when she saw Jiang Siyang smiling. His voice was as gentle as ever as he spoke. "My mother passed away a long time ago, so it doesn't matter." ---
