Holiday Surprises

Chapter 70

1 As Christmas approached, Su Jingming found himself being coached by Ren Wei. "Listen, with men, you have to keep things fresh," Ren Wei advised. "That’s how you keep them loving you." "Am I not a man?" Su Jingming countered. "Don't I deserve some 'freshness' too?" Ren Wei looked Su Jingming up and down before shaking his head helplessly. "A fool like you is the type to be single-mindedly devoted. You don't need novelty." Despite his retort, Su Jingming still dutifully prepared roses, candles, red wine, and steak on Christmas Day. He even changed into formal attire, and now, all he had to do was wait for Wen Yan to come home from work. Su Jingming waited from six o'clock until eight in the evening, well past Wen Yan’s usual arrival time. Normally, Wen Yan would have called ahead to let him know if he was going to be late. Unable to sit still any longer, Su Jingming dialed Wen Yan’s number. It was answered almost instantly. "Where are you?" Su Jingming asked. "Just pulled up downstairs," Wen Yan replied. "Oh." Su Jingming looked at the spread on the table, feeling a bit self-conscious. "Then you—" Before he could finish, Wen Yan interrupted, "I twisted my ankle when I was leaving work. Can you come down and help me up?" When Su Jingming rushed to the parking lot, he found Wen Yan leaning against the car door, wearing a white dress shirt with his suit jacket draped over his arm. When he saw Su Jingming, his eyes crinkled into a smile. Su Jingming looked him over anxiously. "Is it serious? How did you twist it?" "It’s a bit swollen," Wen Yan murmured. "A hot compress should fix it." "Then why didn't you call me to pick you up earlier?" Su Jingming kept his eyes glued to Wen Yan’s foot. They had only taken two steps when Wen Yan said, "Little Hero, could you do me a favor and grab some documents from the trunk? I forgot them." Su Jingming was half-skeptical, but after making sure Wen Yan was standing steadily, he walked to the back of the car. Before he could even reach for the handle, the trunk lid rose slowly on its own. What met his eyes was a trunk overflowing with roses. In the center of the flowers sat the latest Tiga Ultraman collectible. Su Jingming’s eyes grew hot, and he found himself momentarily speechless. Wen Yan walked over, rested a hand on Su Jingming’s shoulder, and pressed a kiss to his cheek. "Merry Christmas." 2 In the second year of their marriage, Lawyer Wen had to go on a three-month business trip to a neighboring province for a major case right around the New Year. Before he left, Wen Yan repeatedly urged Su Jingming to go to his parents' house for dinner on New Year’s Eve. He told him not to feel shy, as he couldn't bear the thought of Su Jingming spending the holiday alone. On the morning of New Year’s Eve, Lawyer Wen called early to check if Su Jingming had headed over to the Wen residence yet. Su Jingming was vague. "I’m heading out the door now. Don't worry. I’ll call you when I get there. You get back to work." Wen Yan felt something was off, but he didn't call him out on it. The case he was handling was too critical to allow for distractions. He worked from dawn until dusk. It wasn't until the sound of firecrackers began to erupt outside, one after another, that Wen Yan realized it was nearly dinner time. The Wen family always ate punctually on this day. Wen Yan rubbed his neck and tried to start a video call with Su Jingming, but no one picked up. Frowning, he called his sister, Wen Miao, instead. "Where’s your brother-in-law? I called him, but he didn't answer." "Brother-in-law? My brother-in-law..." Wen Miao huffed. "It’s the New Year and all you care about is Jingming-ge, right? You’re not even going to greet Mom and Dad?" Wen Yan paused, then had Wen Miao put him on speakerphone so he could wish his parents a Happy New Year. Once the formalities were over, before Wen Yan could ask about Su Jingming again, Wen Miao abruptly hung up. When he tried to call back, her phone was turned off. Wen Yan rubbed the bridge of his nose and sighed. He had no idea what those people were up to on New Year’s Eve. Perhaps it was because the holiday atmosphere was so thick, but Wen Yan found himself feeling restless and distracted, his heart aching with how much he missed Su Jingming. Finally, he grabbed his coat and headed for the door. The moment he opened it, he saw Su Jingming sitting on a suitcase, chin resting on his hand, looking half-asleep. Wen Yan stood in silence for a few seconds before stepping forward quietly and crouching down. "Su Jingming?" Su Jingming’s eyelids fluttered open. Seeing Wen Yan’s face suddenly magnified in front of him, he lost his balance and started to tip backward. Wen Yan caught him, his voice tinged with a playful tease. "What are you doing? Sitting out here on New Year’s Eve... you look quite pitiful." A self-conscious flush crept onto Su Jingming’s face. "I came to spend the New Year with you." "What..." "Didn't you say we would spend every New Year together from now on?" It was as if they had traveled back many years to the moment Wen Yan had held Su Jingming’s hand and made that promise. He had remembered it all along.
