Chapter 73 - Confessions of the Abyss
"Don't be sad anymore," Ye Xiao murmured, his voice barely a whisper as he leaned into the other man. "I'll love you properly from now on. I won't forget again—I promise."
Liu Wukong’s response was a low, resonant hum that seemed to vibrate through Ye Xiao’s very bones. "I know," he said softly, his gaze fixed on Ye Xiao with an intensity that could swallow stars. "When you saved me... I knew then. I’ve always known."
They held each other for a long moment, their faces pressed together in a rare instance of quiet, unadulterated intimacy. The air around them seemed to still, the chaotic energies of the Abyss momentarily pacified by this simple human gesture.
Then, the scratching of a fountain pen against a clipboard broke the silence. Lu Daoshi cleared his throat loudly, looking like a man who had seen far too much and been paid far too little for the privilege of witnessing cosmic romance.
"Are we done with the melodrama?" Lu asked, flipping a page with an exaggerated flourish. "We still have a few more questions to get through before the universe implodes or the author runs out of ink. Sit down, both of you."
Ye Xiao pulled back, grinning sheepishly and rubbing the back of his neck, while Liu remained composed, though his eyes still held a lingering, molten warmth.
"Question forty-four," Lu Daoshi read out, his tone as flat as a textbook. "How do you express your love for one another?"
Liu Wukong didn't hesitate. His voice was steady, carrying the weight of eons. "By being good to him. By giving him everything I have to offer. But..." He paused, a flicker of something deeply human crossing his divine features. "Sometimes, I find myself wanting to receive something in return. Just a little."
Ye Xiao chimed in immediately, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Me? Oh, that’s easy. I sell moe. I act cute!"
Lu Daoshi looked up from his clipboard, his expression one of pure, unadulterated judgment. "You? Act cute? You’re about as cute as a brick to the face. You’re just being shamelessly obnoxious. Does 'acting cute' actually put food on the table?"
Liu Wukong’s expression remained calm, almost indifferent to the insult. "I provide the food," he stated simply, as if it were a fundamental law of physics.
Ye Xiao stuck his tongue out at Lu Daoshi, wiggling his fingers near his ears. "That’s right! He feeds me! So what if I’m shameless? Come on, hit me! Try and hit me!"
Lu Daoshi sighed, massaging his temples. "Moving on before I lose my mind. Question forty-five: When do you feel like the other person 'doesn't love me anymore'?"
The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. A heavy, melancholic shadow fell over Liu Wukong’s face. His eyes dimmed, and he looked down at his hands, the silence stretching out uncomfortably.
Ye Xiao’s playful demeanor vanished. He reached out, grabbing Lu Daoshi’s arm. "Hey, stop asking that! Look at him—Lao Liu is practically going to cry! Don't bring up that depressing stuff."
"I have to ask the questions on the list, Ye Xiao," Lu grumbled, though he looked slightly guilty. "What about you then? When do you feel unloved?"
Ye Xiao didn't even have to think about it. He pointed a finger toward the bedroom. "Is that even a question? In bed! Whenever he’s being a tyrant and won't listen to me!"
Liu Wukong didn't look up, his expression remaining a picture of silent, tragic sorrow, though a faint twitch at the corner of his mouth suggested he was listening intently.
"Fine, fine," Lu said, scribbling something down. "Question forty-seven: Are there any secrets you keep from each other?"
Liu Wukong looked at Ye Xiao. "There are things... things that simply cannot be said. Not because I wish to hide them, but because the words don't exist in your tongue."
Ye Xiao sighed, leaning back in his chair. "I can't even keep secrets if I wanted to. He reads my mind half the time anyway. It’s like living with a walking, talking privacy violation."
"Only some parts," Liu corrected gently. "Is there anything else you’ve hidden from me?"
Ye Xiao hesitated, then leaned in close, whispering loudly enough for the whole room to hear. "Actually, Lao Liu... to be honest, I’ve always kind of wanted to top you."
Liu Wukong didn't miss a beat. "Keep hiding that thought. Forever."
"Oh," Ye Xiao slumped. "Right. Got it."
"Question forty-eight," Lu continued, ignoring the sexual tension. "Where does your sense of inferiority come from?"
Liu’s voice dropped an octave. "I have loved him for so long that it has become a sickness. I am beyond help, yet he is..." He trailed off, the weight of his ancient loneliness hanging in the air.
Ye Xiao grabbed Liu’s hand, squeezing it tight. "I’m beyond help too, okay? We’re both hopeless. So stop being sad!" He then leaned in with a wicked grin. "But seriously, Liu Wukong, have you ever felt inferior because of... you know... *that* thing?" He gestured vaguely toward Liu’s lap with a suggestive eyebrow waggle.
Liu Wukong simply stared back, his face returning to that mask of silent, divine suffering.
"Question forty-nine: Is your relationship public or a secret?" Lu Daoshi didn't even wait for an answer, snorting as he checked the box. "Forget it. The whole damn world knows. The Abyss, the gods, the police—everyone’s had a front-row seat to this disaster."
"And finally, question fifty," Lu said, his voice softening just a fraction. "Do you believe your love can last forever?"
Liu Wukong looked Ye Xiao directly in the eyes, his gaze unwavering. "Yes."
Ye Xiao beamed, his entire face lighting up with a radiance that rivaled any divine light. "Well, if Lao Liu says it can, then it definitely will!"
