Fei Cheng had spent the last two years of middle school constantly in the company of Cheng Yifei and Yu Qing. Consequently, he felt a deep-seated reluctance toward making new friends. Although he would laugh and joke when meeting new people, he never truly let them into his heart. Furthermore, Cheng Yifei would wait for him at the back door of the classroom after every class; they would exchange a few words before the next period began, making the time pass quickly.
Yu Qing, on the other hand, was an extrovert. In less than a day, he had become a familiar face to most of the students in his class, able to call everyone by name and strike up a conversation. He was far busier than Cheng Yifei and Fei Cheng, who seemed immersed in their own world. Of course, no matter how busy he was, barring special circumstances, he still ate dinner with the two of them.
It was Wednesday, and the dinner menu included amaranth. The red juice from the vegetable had bled into more than half of Fei Cheng’s rice. Fei Cheng frowned, meticulously picking around the amaranth and the stained grains of rice.
Cheng Yifei glanced at him, wordlessly swapped his own untouched tray for Fei Cheng’s, and took a bite of the rejected meal. "You don't like amaranth?" he asked.
Fei Cheng blinked, startled, before replying, "I guess I don't..."
"I didn't realize you were such a picky eater, Cheng-cheng," Yu Qing said, looking up from his food. "I won't get the amaranth next time then. Is there anything else you don't eat?"
Fei Cheng thought for a moment, but his mind was blank. "I don't remember. I usually only know once I see it."
"Well, if you run into something else you hate next time, just consider it bad luck," Yu Qing remarked. He didn't find Cheng Yifei’s gesture strange at all; they were brothers, after all—what was wrong with swapping food? As he ate, he suddenly remembered something. "By the way, Cheng-cheng, don't ignore your classmates. And Cheng Yifei, it’s one thing for you to be all cold and aloof, but you run over to find Cheng-cheng every single break. How is he supposed to hang out with anyone else?"
Cheng Yifei spared him a glance. "Did I go find him after the third period this morning?"
Yu Qing choked. That was only because the math teacher had appointed Cheng Yifei as the class representative and called him to the office!
Fei Cheng slowly ate his dinner and said to Yu Qing, "I don't want to get to know too many people. There's no point. After the streaming exam at the end of the semester, I’m going to be in the same class as Brother Cheng."
Cheng Yifei let out a low, muffled chuckle.
"What are you laughing at!" Yu Qing barked. "I’ll make it into the top class too! No, wait—Cheng Yifei, didn't you used to say you wanted to toughen Cheng-cheng up? Is this how you help him integrate into a new class? You won't always be free. If you get busy, what’s Cheng-cheng supposed to do by himself?"
Cheng Yifei and Fei Cheng replied in unison: "Study."
Yu Qing: "..."
Fei Cheng pushed his drink toward Yu Qing. "We’re going to be reshuffled into different classes anyway, so there's no use in making too many connections. Didn't you say before that having the two of you as brothers was enough for me?"
Yu Qing touched the cold bottle. "It *is* enough... but I was young and naive back then. My dad says interpersonal relationships are very important. Just being a bookworm is no good."
Fei Cheng shrugged. He felt Yu Qing’s father was quite open-minded, but everyone was different, and he simply didn't enjoy making new friends.
Yu Qing only brought it up because he felt this wasn't good for Fei Cheng. Because Cheng Yifei ran to the neighboring class every break, it drew a lot of attention. Even the students in Fei Cheng's class had started noticing him.
Cheng Yifei had the ability to turn people away, but Fei Cheng didn't—he was too easy to talk to. His dislike for making new friends was a dislike for taking the initiative; if someone else took the initiative to talk to him, could he really maintain that cold exterior?
"I feel like a kindhearted old mother, worrying myself to death for you two, and you don't even appreciate it. I need to go talk to Minmin," Yu Qing said, taking a weary sip of his drink as if burdened by the weight of the world.
"You're going to find Minmin? Does she even pay attention to you?" Fei Cheng glanced at him, feeling a bit puzzled. "I feel like she’s been avoiding me lately. I don't know why."
The warmth in Cheng Yifei’s eyes vanished. He asked nonchalantly, "When we ran into her this morning, did she speak to you?"
Fei Cheng pondered. "She did, but it felt different from before. It was just a greeting."
"It’s the start of the term, everyone is busy. What else did you want her to say?" Cheng Yifei set down his chopsticks. "She’ll make new friends. You’re a boy, she’s a girl. If she’s constantly looking for you, do you think that’s appropriate?"
"Hmm... that makes sense." Fei Cheng tried to recall his personality during this period in his past life, but the memories were too distant and blurry.
Currently, Qiu Minmin gave him the impression of being quite optimistic and cheerful, so there shouldn't be any issues. Now that her life's trajectory had changed, her relationship with her family would change too. Any pressure she felt should only be academic.
Right, he couldn't use the past to speculate about the present!
Yu Qing looked at Cheng Yifei, then at Fei Cheng, and remained silent.
He was a bit confused. He had originally thought Fei Cheng liked Qiu Minmin, so he wanted to help his brother's romance blossom. But when they graduated middle school, Fei Cheng said he didn't like her anymore. Yu Qing understood that feelings could fade over time; that wasn't strange. But if he didn't like her, why was he still so concerned?
He spoke to Fei Cheng in the tone of someone who had seen it all. "Cheng-cheng, if you don't have those kinds of feelings for Qiu Minmin, don't be *too* concerned, you know? It leads to misunderstandings. Keep your concern within limits! Honestly, if you want a sister so badly, just ask your parents to have another one."
Fei Cheng automatically ignored the last sentence. He met Yu Qing’s gaze. "I haven't done anything ambiguous, have I?"
"Good heavens! Your behavior isn't enough to make people think things? Bringing her an umbrella when it rains, memorizing her class schedule, giving her things, staying with her whenever she wants to chat—that’s the textbook definition of a doting boyfriend! You do all that and then say you don't like her? That’s practically being a rogue. It baffles me to no end," Yu Qing said, shaking his head. He didn't notice Cheng Yifei’s expression turning cold beside him.
Fei Cheng was stunned for a moment. "Didn't you teach me to do those things?"
Yu Qing: "I taught you that so you could *chase* a girl!"
Fei Cheng: "..." Oh.
Cheng Yifei ended the topic. "Don't do those things anymore unless she approaches you first."
As far as things stood, Qiu Minmin wasn't approaching Fei Cheng. As long as Fei Cheng didn't initiate, everything would be fine.
Fei Cheng struggled with the thought for a while. Minmin wouldn't... think he liked her because of those things, would she? He had said from the start that he treated her like a sister. Given her personality, she shouldn't have misunderstood.
"So, you're saying she’s ignoring me because I went too far? That I crossed the safety distance between a guy and a girl and made her uncomfortable?"
That couldn't be right!
Yu Qing cleared his tray. "Probably. I think you should worry about yourself rather than her. She’s much more outgoing than you. She has ten times as many friends as you do. Ten times, you hear me?"
Fei Cheng gave him a speechless look and followed him with his own tray. "I really do care for her like a real sister. I can't even look out for her?"
"You treat her like a sister, but she might not see you as a brother," Cheng Yifei said from behind Fei Cheng, looking at the crown of his head.
Fei Cheng sighed for a while, placed his tray in the recycling window, and went to the row of faucets outside the cafeteria to wash his hands. After finishing, he said, "Fine, I’ll try not to hover around her."
"Aha, now you're talking!" Yu Qing happily hooked an arm around his neck. "Let's take the chance to find someone even cuter. High school is full of beauties. I used to think Wang Xinru from our middle school was pretty enough, but now that I’m in high school, I see there’s always a taller mountain! Let me tell you, my class’s Chinese rep is gorgeous! She has two dimples when she smiles, and her voice is as clear as a mountain stream. It’s incredibly pleasant to listen to. I’ll introduce you two some other day!"
Just as he finished, a sharp pain suddenly shot through his calf. Yu Qing let out a wail and hopped away on one foot, yelling, "Cheng Yifei, what did you kick me for?!"
Fei Cheng found Yu Qing’s pained expression hilarious and laughed. "Because you were asking for it."
Yu Qing pointed a finger at Fei Cheng. "Cheng-cheng, don't you dare get arrogant just because I spoil you. If it weren't for the fact that you're handsome, smart, and loyal, I wouldn't be friends with you!"
"Even if you say that, I’m not going to plead for mercy from Brother Cheng for you," Fei Cheng shrugged, leaning on Cheng Yifei’s shoulder as he laughed at Yu Qing, who was still rubbing his leg.
Cheng Yifei hadn't kicked him very hard; it was just a warning. After three or five minutes, the pain faded, and Yu Qing trotted back to Fei Cheng’s side, hooking his arm around his neck again. "You heartless little thing, always in cahoots with Cheng Yifei. But seriously, are you doing okay in Class Two? No one’s bullying you in the classroom or the dorms, right?"
"No. I’m at least 1.7 meters tall now, you know. 1.7 meters. There haven't been any conflicts, and I’m not the type to go looking for trouble." Fei Cheng glanced sideways at Yu Qing’s height. He was a late bloomer and was still about six or seven centimeters shorter than them, but he was catching up. He firmly believed he would reach 1.8 meters.
Yu Qing nodded and casually patted the top of Fei Cheng’s head. "True, no one’s going to bully you for no reason now, but that doesn't rule out idiots. They’re probably jealous of you. Hey, are the girls in your class dying to talk to you? A few bold ones in my class have been asking me about you~"
Cheng Yifei looked at the winking Yu Qing and said unhappily, "Why haven't they asked me?"
"Oh, please! Big brother, go look in a mirror, okay? With that ice-cold face of yours, who would dare talk to you? Any girl brave enough to approach you would need massive courage and skin as thick as a wall. As thick as a wall!" Yu Qing’s tone was full of mock disdain.
Cheng Yifei: "..."
Fei Cheng looked at Cheng Yifei and shook his head. "It’s not that exaggerated. Brother Cheng is cold on the outside but warm on the inside. He’s a great person."
Yu Qing threw his hands up in surrender. "Fine, fine. You two just keep praising and defending each other. I won't say a word. Not a single word."
Fei Cheng rubbed his earlobe, feeling a tiny bit embarrassed. However, Yu Qing quickly steered the conversation elsewhere. He breathed a secret sigh of relief. Just as he looked up to join the conversation, he inadvertently met Cheng Yifei’s smiling gaze. He froze, and the words he was about to say vanished into thin air.
*What... what are you smiling at...*
Yu Qing was still looking ahead, talking animatedly. "Our military training lasts half a month, and then we go straight into the National Day holiday. I heard the sophomores only get three days off, so this year is our only easy one. Should we go somewhere far to play? The beach, camping, hiking, a trip... I want to see the Leifeng Pagoda where Lady White Snake was imprisoned, or maybe Jinshan Temple."
Cheng Yifei noticed Fei Cheng’s unease and slowly withdrew his gaze, hiding the tenderness in his eyes. He couldn't push too hard; he couldn't scare him. At the very least... he had to wait until after the Gaokao.
The three of them finished their meal and returned to the dormitory.
They all lived on the fourth floor. Fei Cheng’s dorm was on the right, while Yu Qing and Cheng Yifei’s was on the left—only a few steps apart.
Each dorm housed six people. It wasn't exactly cramped, but it wasn't spacious either.
His roommate in Bed One, Du Hui, saw Fei Cheng return and greeted him. "You're back. Hurry up and shower. We're going home tomorrow, but we still have to do evening self-study tonight. The school is absolutely heartless!" He sat cross-legged on his bed, swinging his towel around.
Opposite Du Hui was Liu Jinling in Bed Four. He was playing on his phone and said, "Self-study is fine. It’s boring staying in the dorm anyway."
Fei Cheng nodded politely, went to his bed to find a change of clothes, and entered the bathroom. As soon as he stepped in, he came to a dead halt. He stared at the naked teenager inside, stunned. "Sorry, I... I didn't know you weren't finished."
"I'm done, I'm done. You go ahead." Li Jia from Bed Five pulled on his underwear. He didn't seem to mind Fei Cheng’s presence at all. He picked up his clothes, dressing as he walked out, and pulled the door shut behind him.
Fei Cheng: "..." *Thanks.*
He hung up his clothes and washed his face. Just as he took off his shirt and was about to pull down his pants, the bathroom door clicked open.
Fei Cheng: "!!!"
He turned his head, bare-chested, to see who it was.
Li Jia walked in, glanced at him, and grinned. "I forgot my phone."
Fei Cheng was speechless. Once Li Jia left, he decisively locked the bathroom door. He paused, making sure no one else was there before stripping to shower. Outside the bathroom, the dorm was a cacophony of laughter and noise.
Ten minutes later, he came out dressed. The weather was still quite hot, so most of the boys in the dorm were shirtless for the sake of coolness.
Being shirtless wasn't the issue. The issue was that these guys were currently lifting Li Jia up, spreading his legs, and preparing to ram him against a bedpost...?!
Hearing the bathroom door open, they all turned to look at Fei Cheng in unison.
"Hehehe..." Du Hui set the lifted Li Jia down and walked toward Fei Cheng. "To enhance the brotherly bond of Dorm 501, let's help Fei Cheng 'fly the plane'!"
Fei Cheng: "???" *Fly the plane?*
*I haven't even "flown a plane" by myself yet!*
"No thanks, our brotherly bond has already been tempered into steel by military training!" Fei Cheng said, backing away.
Liu Jinling’s laughter was lewd. "Stop talking! Brothers! Get him!"
Fei Cheng spun around, ducked back into the bathroom, and quickly locked the door.
What the hell! People actually played like this?
*Bang! Bang! Bang!* The bathroom door was pounded heavily.
"Fei Cheng, don't be like that! This is a welcoming ceremony. You can hide today, but you can't hide forever. Just come out. We promise to be gentle~ gentle~"
"Come out, come out!"
Fei Cheng pressed a hand to his forehead. He was not playing this game.
"Can we do it another way? How about I treat everyone to dinner?" Fei Cheng tried to negotiate.
"Is that how it is? You look down on us? What’s the deal with you hanging out with people from the other class every day since school started?"
What kind of nonsense was this? He could hang out with whoever he wanted. Did they live by the ocean to be managing things so "widely"?
Fei Cheng wasn't worried. He leaned his back against the bathroom door and said, "My 'little brother' is very fragile. He can't handle this. Why don't you guys let me off?"
"As if anyone’s 'little brother' isn't fragile! We’re hitting the 'eggs,' so hurry up and come out!"
"The 'eggs' are off-limits too!"
The two sides reached a stalemate, arguing back and forth for four or five minutes.
When Cheng Yifei and Yu Qing arrived, they saw three people blocking the bathroom door while two others sat on their beds, using towels like swords and brandishing them excitedly.
Cheng Yifei and Yu Qing stood on either side and knocked on the door of Dorm 501. "Excuse me, is Fei Cheng here?"
Du Hui and the others looked back. Realizing they were looking for Fei Cheng, they lied through their teeth. "Not here!"
Fei Cheng opened the door with total confidence.
Du Hui and the others: "..."
Fei Cheng warned them, "Don't come over."
Cheng Yifei looked at Fei Cheng as he walked toward him. "What happened?"
Fei Cheng passed his bed, stuffed his school ID and some change into his pocket, and said, "Nothing, just everyone messing around. See you guys later."
Once Fei Cheng was close, Cheng Yifei put an arm around his shoulder and led him away. Yu Qing didn't leave immediately; he pointed at Fei Cheng’s retreating back with a beaming smile. "Cheng-cheng is my cousin. He’s very introverted, so please don't mind him. Let's all get along and look out for each other. See ya!"
Du Hui: "Oh, so they're cousins."
Liu Jinling: "Clinging to his brother like he hasn't been weaned yet. Haha."
Cheng Yifei didn't let go of Fei Cheng’s shoulder as they walked down the stairs. "What were they blocking you for just now?"
Fei Cheng was about to speak when Yu Qing ran up from behind and slapped his back. "You didn't wait for me again! Are we brothers or not? But seriously, Cheng-cheng, what were they doing blocking you?"
Fei Cheng rubbed his cheek. "...Flying the plane."
"What?" Yu Qing blanked for a second, then burst out laughing. "Damn, that game hurts like hell! I wonder where they learned that. We didn't have that kind of twisted hobby in middle school. You didn't get 'flown,' did you?!"
Fei Cheng: "No. I locked myself in the bathroom and waited for you guys to come find me."
"Haha, smart, smart!"
Cheng Yifei patted his head. "Protect yourself."
Fei Cheng nodded, feeling that life was becoming a bit difficult.
***
The academic atmosphere in the first year of high school was relatively relaxed. With classes during the day and ball games on the field after school, life was decent.
At first, Cheng Yifei could find Fei Cheng often, but once his duties as a class officer were assigned, he barely had any free time.
Yu Qing had also made many friends and had company wherever he went.
Since Fei Cheng was in a different class with a different schedule, his activities didn't always align with theirs.
"Let's go, Number Six. We have PE next." Li Jia leaned over to look at Fei Cheng’s worksheet. Based on the Grade 10 knowledge he was currently learning, he was completely baffled.
He shook his head in fear. "Where did you get this test? I can't understand a word of it!"
Fei Cheng tucked the paper into his desk and stood up to walk out with him. "My brother gave it to me. Did the PE teacher say what we're training today?"
"Standing long jump, probably. It’s one of the items for the physical exam. But we have to run the 800 meters first." Li Jia hooked his arm around Fei Cheng’s shoulder as they left the classroom. He spotted someone and immediately shook Fei Cheng’s shoulder, winking and whispering, "Number Six, look at the girl from the next class! See her? The one with the bob and straight bangs who looks like a doll? She definitely has a thing for you! I've seen her many times, always stealing glances at you."
Fei Cheng instinctively looked over. The girl Li Jia mentioned immediately turned away, looking incredibly shy.
Fei Cheng didn't pay it much mind. He glanced at Cheng Yifei and Yu Qing’s seats but didn't see them, feeling a tiny pang of disappointment.
Beside him, Li Jia was immersed in the excitement of the upcoming PE class where his soul could be free; he couldn't read anything from Fei Cheng’s calm face.
The two went to the field. As soon as the bell rang, the sports representative shouted for the class to line up.
There were over a dozen classes in Grade 10. Each class had two consecutive PE periods a week, so they often ran into other classes.
Fei Cheng wasn't particularly tall, but he wasn't short either. At 1.73 meters, he was in the middle of the pack. If it weren't for his outstanding looks, his height would have made him disappear into the crowd.
"Hey, why is Class Eleven having PE today? Don't they have it on Fridays?" the student next to Fei Cheng asked, craning his neck toward Class Eleven.
Class Eleven?
That was Minmin’s class.
Fei Cheng followed his gaze but didn't see anything.
"Quiet!"
"Eyes—right!"
"Attention!"
"At ease!"
The sports representative blew his whistle. "The teacher is lining up Class Eleven. He wants us to run the 800 meters first. Right—face! Forward, march!"
By the time the training was over, the first period was finished.
The second PE period was usually for free activities.
Fei Cheng felt lazy and sat on a stone bench under a tree to pass the time, surrounded by a few classmates.
Liu Jinling leaned against the stone table, drinking a Coke. "Number Six, want to play basketball?"
Fei Cheng had grown used to the nickname his roommates gave him. Since he was the youngest in the dorm and had the last bed number, they all called him "Number Six."
"No. The sun is too strong." Fei Cheng tilted his head back, watching the sunlight filter through the leaves.
"Then what are we supposed to do? It’s so boring." Liu Jinling crushed the empty can, stood up to stretch his ankles, then tossed the can up and kicked it.
The Coke can flew through the air in a parabola, landed near the trash can, and rolled quite a distance.
Liu Jinling cursed and trotted over to pick it up and throw it in properly.
Fei Cheng laughed.
Liu Jinling ran back, complaining that his "Foshan Shadowless Kick" had missed its mark!
"I'm not bragging, but from here to the trash can is twenty meters. None of you can kick as accurately as me. Back in middle school, I once kicked one fifty meters! Even my Dean of Students saw it and—"
Before he could finish, Fei Cheng suddenly stood up and bolted.
"Hey?! Number Six, where are you going!" He shouted, but no one answered. He asked Li Jia, who had also stood up, "What’s wrong with him?"
Li Jia chased after him. "Looks like something happened to a girl in Class Eleven."
Fei Cheng pushed through the crowd on the basketball court and knelt down, patting Qiu Minmin’s pale cheek. "Minmin? Minmin!"
He quickly hoisted her onto his back to take her to the infirmary, not forgetting to tell her classmates, "I'm taking her to the school doctor! Go tell your teacher!"
Qiu Minmin’s classmates were stunned, none of them reacting in time to figure out who this person was who had suddenly rushed in.
Fei Cheng carried Qiu Minmin straight toward the infirmary, his lips pressed thin and his eyes full of anxiety.
Cheng Yifei was coming out of the stairwell with a stack of graded tests. Hearing hurried footsteps, he looked up and saw Fei Cheng running toward him with a girl on his back.
"Cheng-cheng? What happened?" Cheng Yifei stepped forward to assess the situation, but Fei Cheng ran right past him. "Brother Cheng, Minmin suddenly fainted!"
Without a second thought, Cheng Yifei gave chase, took Qiu Minmin from Fei Cheng’s back into his own arms, and ran toward the clinic.
Liu Jinling, who had caught up, watched their retreating backs in confusion. "Hey, Li Jia, isn't that Number Six’s brother?"
Li Jia: "Yeah."
Fei Cheng was out of breath. He pushed open the infirmary door for Cheng Yifei and immediately rushed to the doctor sitting behind the desk. "Doctor, doctor! My sister was playing basketball and suddenly fainted! Please check on her!"
The school doctor didn't waste time. He helped Cheng Yifei settle Qiu Minmin on a bed and began his examination. After two or three minutes, the doctor removed his stethoscope, his expression relaxing. "She has a cold and a bit of low blood sugar."
Fei Cheng nodded and asked, "Is she really okay, Doctor? Does she have a fever? Will this kind of fainting cause any damage to her body?"
It had been a long time since the doctor had seen such a close pair of siblings. He smiled, returned to his desk to write a prescription, and said, "No. Just be careful and make sure she gets plenty of rest. What class are you in?"
Fei Cheng: "Grade 10, Class Two."
Doctor: "And your sister’s name?"
Fei Cheng: "Qiu Minmin, Grade 10, Class Eleven."
The doctor’s pen paused. He looked up at him for a moment, then seemed to realize something and nodded understandingly. "Let her rest here for a while. She’ll wake up soon. You two can go back to class."
"I'm in PE, it’s free time so I don't have anything to do. I’ll stay here and watch her." Fei Cheng then looked at Cheng Yifei. "Brother Cheng, you should go back to class. Here, take your tests."
Cheng Yifei looked at him deeply for a long moment before taking the papers. "Then stay here with her. I’ll come by after class."
Fei Cheng wanted to say it wasn't necessary, but Cheng Yifei didn't give him the chance to refuse.
About twenty minutes later, Qiu Minmin woke up. Realizing she was in an unfamiliar place, she scrambled to sit up. Seeing Fei Cheng by the bed, she was surprised. "Cheng-cheng? Why are you here?"
Because of her heavy cold, her voice was thick and nasal, making her sound quite pitiful.
Fei Cheng poured her a cup of warm water and handed her a packet of medicine. "Why didn't you take medicine if you were sick? You fainted from low blood sugar! Drink some warm water first."
Qiu Minmin rubbed her groggy head. "I thought it would get better on its own in a few days. What time is it?"
Fei Cheng said, "Eleven-thirty. Class is almost over."
Qiu Minmin took the medicine and then ate a White Rabbit creamy candy Fei Cheng gave her. With his company, she left the infirmary.
On the way, they were met by Cheng Yifei, Yu Qing, Jun Ting, and Li Lijuan.
Facing her friends' concern and scolding, Qiu Minmin apologized repeatedly, promising she wouldn't be so careless with her health again.
Fei Cheng walked her to the girls' dormitory before returning to the boys' dorm with Cheng Yifei and Yu Qing.
Yu Qing hooked an arm around his shoulder and squeezed. "Cheng-cheng, you were really scared, weren't you? I heard from your roommates that when you picked up Minmin, you were moving at eight hundred miles a second! Impressive. I didn't know you had that kind of stamina."
Fei Cheng called him hyperbolic but nodded. "I really was scared. She was running and then just collapsed. I thought something serious had happened."
"It’s good that she’s okay." Yu Qing patted his shoulder, then added mischievously, "You were so nervous about her—are you *sure* you don't like her?"
Fei Cheng shot him a look.
Yu Qing raised his hands in surrender. "Okay, okay, I get it. You don't like her. I won't ask again. I won't ask."
Cheng Yifei said nothing. He only reached out and rubbed Fei Cheng’s head, telling him to make sure he got a midday nap.
